you shouldn't use batteries right off the charger?

I don't think it is a good idea.

If your Charger is doing everything it is Supposed to do, it shouldn't hurt them. But many chargers are Mass Produced with Questionable Quality Control.

I don't leave my Batteries on a Charger any Longer than Needed. And I Never leave them Charging when I go Out or when I go to Sleep.

I use AW IMR 18650's. I charge them and then they go in a battery box. I use them in rotation. When my Provari tells me the battery needs replacing I pull out the battery from the Provari, let it sit for a couple of hours and then charge it.

My batteries last a long long time. Read up on Battery U ;)

I'm certainly no authority on batts but I always allow a little cool down time before and after charging.(not 24hrs. though)
Always check for heat. Heat is not a good sign and easy to recognize.
First use is always away from my mouth/body, for a test fire, usually a battery level check.

It's most likely if the battery is going to be a problem it'll happen on the charger or first use after charging(from what I've read).

And, for those of you that meter your cells, allowing them to 'sag' for a while after charge tells you the terminal voltage of the cell. Even a old crappy cell can come off the charger at 4.20v. But does it stay there?

Good point. I always meter them before putting in a mod unless it's a Provari and I meter it in the Provari as soon as the cap is screwed on.
