Is vaping worth the trouble of concealing it from your family?

A friend of mine is willing to sell me one of his old e-cigs for a very cheap price. It works just fine and it's very nice to vape with (I've used it before) so there's no issue with discretely acquiring an e-cig. The only issue is how to hide it from my family. I'm 18 (19 in a few months) so obviously I don't need my family to make my decisions for me, but I also know when it's a good time to tell them things and when I should just keep it on the down low. Based on how my family is, vaping would definitely be a "down low" kind of thing. Would investing money in vaping (just as a hobby. It's not to get off of regular cigs or anything) be worth it if I could only vape freely in solitude or around (and occasionally with) my close and trusted friends?

Any relevant input is appreciated. :)

If you don't smoke cigarettes then why vape? Most people vape so they are not smoking the nasty stuff. Why vape for a hobby? Find a different hobby other than vaping. Why add stuff to your lungs when you don't need it. Vaping isn't 100% safe I hope you know.

If it would be something you have to hide, why bother? Now, if you are smoking, that's another story, but vaping just to Vape isn't worth it to me. It's gotten me off of a 3 pack a day bad habit, but I would be better off not doing either. Money can be put to use elsewhere that will bring you more enjoyment.

I figure age 50 parents can except hearing things from their kids they done in the past. Even better telling my parents things now that they are in their 80's and both have Dementia. This way 20 minutes later they forget what you told them. CHEERS!

Since you don't smoke i think there are a tonn of things you could do that are more fun... Travel! Even just 200 mileish road trips. Camping / hiking / sporty thing. Get a killer stereo and then some bad ... headphones for until you move out. Books, comic books, video games, really nice co puter and / or tablet...

Put the PV down and get on with your life Son, most of us here were addicted to smoking prior to vaping. So being tethered to a vaporizer is similar to cigarettes, you've not formed these patterns/addictions yet so my advice to you is don't even start ........the best to you and remember to be your own man

I don't think it's a bad hobby...but secrets suck. I'm a very open person, my dad new what I was doing at 16 and he didn't approve but you can't really stop anyone from doing what they want. He gave me the freedom to make my own mistakes and I'm better for it. If you really think the fallout isn't worth it, then it's probably not.

Conceal my vape gear? I'd need to throw one of those fumigation tents over my house.

Like most things I did without my parents' approval at about that age and in their house ... they're likely to find out (not that it ever stopped me) ... especially if you're thinking of building (I'm guessing this is the 'hobby' aspect) and little scraps of kanthal start appearing everywhere.

up to you to decide if the enjoyment is worth the fallout

This a prime example of why vaping shouldnt be considered a hobby.

First, youre seriously contemplating lying to your family?

Second, hobbies should enrich your life in some way.Learning how to paint, or cook, or speak a foreign language does that.

But if youve never smoked before then you could be damaging your body by vaping.

Most of us believe that vaping is safer than smoking.

But breathing nothing but air is safer than vaping.

And why do you want to start vaping in the first place?

Just so you can look cool?

That doesnt seem like a very good reason to me.

I vape because I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for 25 years and vaping is the only thing Ive found that has gotten me off of cigarettes.

My advice is not to start.

Find something else to do with your time. Maybe even something that will land you a girlfriend.

If you live to vape THAT MUCH, then go ahead.

I'm gonna be blunt. Screw all the people who are gonna tell you not to vape. Until it's scientifically proven to be bad for us (doubt it). Go for it. It's just like drinking. Which is truly bad for you. Don't do it around them. You ain't 21 yet. That being said I would go with zero nic. You don't wanna become dependent on it if you wanna manage to not have the "urge to do it around them". Good luck. I say go for it. It's a great hobby. Message if you need advice. Idc if I get flamed for this

They used to say smoking cigs was good for you... Not that I think vaping is bad. I just see non smokers vaping as another case against us. Someone will call it a gateway to smoking and nicotine addiction. That's heat that isn't needed right now.

Hence why I said use zero nic. And I like the argument I saw from someone the other day. We all started smoking initially knowing it was bad for us. People told us not to. I see vaping,
Personally and I know the government doesn't see it this way, as a safer alternative to cigs: when people say I wanna see what the hype is about nicotine like we did before we started smoking. They will try vaping instead. Instead of all these kids smoking outside of frat parties at college. They will be vaping. Oh the non smokers who used to bum smokes from me at parties...

I'm not disagreeing, but I'm not encouraging a non smoker to try vaping. He wants to hide it from his family, not something to recomend in my book. Either he needs to move out or make sure his family is ok with it. Their roof, their rules. That is why I moved out of my parents house the day after my 17th birthday. I followed my parents rules until I was under my own roof and could make my own rules.
