I came out to my family as a vaper this weekend

tl;dr: I vaped around my family this weekend and they were supportive.

I have been an on and off smoker for 14 years. My family hasn't always known. When actively smoking I had between 1/2 - 1 pad habit.

I had most recently been quit for 3 years. Cold turkey. Then, there were 2 deaths in my immediate family, I got married, moved internationally (from Korea back to Canada), and went to work at a call centre of all places. I started smoking again but was only up to about 5 analogs a day. Still, I hated it. My husband hates smoking so I was sneaking and it was generally a bad scene.

My friend (Violetsoda on ECF) bought me a 302 pen style and I was almost immediately off the analogues. That was nearly 3mo ago. I now have 2 ego batteries (650 mAh ego Q and 1100 mAh ego K) and some clearos. I went down to 12mg juice and now vape a home and don't sneak around. It was still tough getting rid of that First Smoke at work. It helped changed my mindset into Work Mode. So, I used some 18mg at a flavour set aside for just that first smoke and cleared up that part of the habit.

Still my family, my dad specifically, didn't know.

This past weekend we had a family reunion where I knew not smoking would be hard. I loaded up with some 24mg juice and vaped away. I wanted to talk to my dad before I started but he was busy.

Later in the night he asked me what the contraption I was using was. I explained it was and e-cig and that it was vapour not smoke and he was cool with it. His only concern was how stressful my life was that I had to return to smoking.

A few of my other family members asked me what it was especially when I started using it inside. I explained again also explaining that I don't like to call it an e-cig because to me it's not a fake cigarette, I prefer vapourizer. They were all really cool and supportive. My god father was really impressed and took a few hits of mine and is now thinking about getting one.

When we got home my husband told me I handled the situation really well and that helped him be more comfortable with my vaping (he's not entirely cool with it and we had had a bit of a freak out fight a few days earlier). He's also starting to understand harm reduction in general and also as it applies to me. We have an agreement that this really is a cessation plan for me and I intend to get off the PV in the future but it's not the pressing matter it was days earlier.

Such a great weekend!

Awesome story. I'm glad everyone was so receptive, and it's very cool that your godfather is thinking of getting one now.

So many people see harmful behavior in such a black or white way (you either do it and it's BAD, or you don't do it and it's GOOD. It's extremely difficult for some people to see the shades of grey in harm reduction approaches. Glad you had a good experience with it!

That is awesome!! As open minded and receptive as most people seem to be about it, I have trouble understanding why there is such opposition out there. I can understand the greed of the government bodies and big tobacco, but not the general public... Why wouldn't the anti smoking movement welcome an option that is not smoky, doesn't smell, and is generally inoffensive overall?
We just have to keep going educating one person at a time I guess..

Thanks for sharing your story! Really motivating! I know my family would rejoice if I were to be like you and actually transition to more vaping than I do smoking... My son recently bought me some ecigs from a company called Bull Dog. Haven't tried them yet but now i'm kinda more encouraged to do so... Once again, thx for sharing! Really encouraging

That is good your family supports you. I just wanted to add that although you plan to quit vaping someday you might consider keeping a small supply of juice and carts plus your batts.Just in case you encounter some stress. jmho

That is definitely my plan. I don't have a cessation schedule completely worked out yet. It has more to do with what I have on hand and how much that runs out. Like I said I'm on a fixed income so that will probably guide my quitting.

Keeping my batts and some juice is pretty much a given for me. I'd much rather fall back into vaping than smoking!!

I would suggest starting subbing in vaping for just regular smoking and then figuring out which smokes are hardest to give up (like mine was that first one at work) and figuring out how to replace that with vaping as the time comes along. Every time you vape instead of smoking it's better even if it's just one at a time.

Good luck to you!

That is a good idea to use different levels on the nic content also :)

I use between 12 and 18 plus have some 24 in reserve for emergency like a super stress time.

I'm 12 most of the time, 18 for high stress, and 24 for a party type situation where I would usually smoke when I drink. Or for my planned 20hr road trip moving to Ontario when I'll just be able to vape when we stop to pee or gas up. My dad is supportive but I don't think he'll let me vape in the car :)

I'm about to start an accelerated Bachechor's of Education program - a 2 yr program in 1 yr. 11 classes a semester. Something tells me I might have a few of those moments :)

I understand the OMG or WTH moments too; along with the stress of school to top those moments off. Im trying to quit myself, had my last smoke two days ago, and my vaping gear is in the mail as I am typing. I hope the move to vaping is a good idea right now, I'm starting Graduate school in a few weeks. Bring on the OMGs and WTHs!!!

Good luck with grad school. In no way would I want to be quitting nicotine under those circumstances! I hope vaping works well for you. What are you taking in school and what gear did you order?

Thanks for the support, BTW forgot to mention, great story and much success to you with your education. I am in a political science program so i will be taking two political philosophy classes and an american government class. On order are a silver vein bullet, ego twist, and some attys, cartos, and juice.
