Success! I repaired the one that failed last night. It wouldn't fire an atty at all. When you hit the fire button it would read low charge and show a blank battery even though the battery was fully charged. I was gonna disassemble it but couldn't find a torx bit or flat screwdriver to fit good enough. After trying to fire it 3 times it would turn off and I'd have to plug the charger in to reset it. I did it 3 times with the same result. I remembered that if they detect a short they will turn off and you have to plug a charger in the usb port to reset it. Also there have been ones that won't fire when you screw an atty down all the way if the grommet is bad. So I tried screwing an atty down until it just started reading the coil and tried it. It still wouldn't fire and still read low charge but I could keep doin it and now it wouldn't turn off. I then screwed it all the way down and it immediately turned off. At that point I could tell it was in the 510 pin, so I pumped it up and down and wiggled it for a couple of minutes. I put the atty back on gently and it worked. I screwed it down snug like I generally do and it's worked great now for over an hour. I believe there was a foreign metal shaving or something in it maybe from the manufacturing process as it has acted up since new quite a bit. I emailed my co-op guy earlier and he said he could get it replaced but I see no reason to now, for the time being. He also said that he has had no reports of failures from the second round of purchases compared to 40% reported faulty in the first round. So things are looking up for the 50s it seems. Sorry about the letter but I will continue to report on whatever happens. Thanks for reading.

That's great to hear Bike, especially given all the problems you've been having with them! I've had my 50 since mid February and [knock wood], haven't had any problems yet. If I do, wiggling the 510 will be the first thing I try.

 I can see people wiggling their 510 pins every time their 50 misfires. My BLS 50 was a different story and I don't think a short in the pin will cause venting of a battery :) Thanks for your comment CR

I love the old Nortons. A buddy of mine rode a Commando back in 72. It was sweet. :) I was a Triumph guy then

I started out as a Triumph guy as well.

The theory I've developed over the years is that everyone starts out as a Triumph person. Once they evolve and become more refined human beings, they become Norton people. :pervy:

I've got an old Commando sitting in storage. Once I get tired of the downtown loft lifestyle, I'll get a house in the 'burbs with a garage so I can start working on her.

Please tell me you weren't trying to charge something from the laptop batteries without the laptop being plugged into the wall.

That's not a problem with the laptop, that would be called user error.
Ahhh. No, I'm not an idiot. But, thanks for assuming I was. Call Apple and ask them if charging electronics EVEN WHILE PLUGGED IN puts a huge strain on your battery and then let me know.

Unfortunate, I was even planning on getting one, not so sure anymore haha. Hopefully its not a common trend among these devices, I also leave my batteries in the charger all the time after they are done charging.

Why? That's a great way to start a fire (if the charger is plugged in), or at the very least, de-charge the batteries (if the charger is not plugged in).

Well, I couldn't get a hammer in there to bang on it, but I did whack tap it against the desk a few times..

I once got 6 more months out of a CRT monitor by giving it a huge angry open-hand slap right on the glass. :D It was just plain fury, but it worked as a life-extender. :D This was back in the days when I smoked in the house; someone said by giving it a good whap, I had knocked some of the sticky carbon deposits off the electron-guns. :D

Hey guys long time lurker but since this happened I had to post. Me and my girlfriend bought an Istick 50 watt about 3 weeks ago, and last night I plugged if up to chatge, woke up unplugged it and went dang this thing is hot. 2 mins later it goes kaboom and catches on fire. Just figured I'd post this up to warn others. Don't trust the chargee to turn off the voltage to your batteries. I'm trying to upload pics but says file is too large.
One of my biggest concerns while charging ANY battery is over charging. I don't trust any of them. I've read in many, many places, that you don't leave a charging battery unattended, nor allow to over-charge. I rotate 2 batteries in the mornings and watch them charge while I'm busy getting ready for my day. I've read too many places of batteries blowing up and catching fire. Air on the side of caution for your next one...watch it charge...:danger:
