I was curious if anyone has more information on this so called study the Italian Health Ministry put out. I cannot find the actual statement or "study" from the Health Ministry. All I can find are the tons of popular press references to it and even more aggravating are the titles of the articles stating electronic cigarettes not effective for smoking cessation. From what I can tell this was not a study at all and had no patients or even data used but was just a collection of statements about misguided beliefs. I really would like to know what was said exactly and if anyone has any knowledge of this. As a scientist I find statement and articles such as these very destructive and counterproductive.

I think research like that is generally slanted and redundant. Heres why...

Why the ....... should it matter if e-cigs help smoking cessation. Thats so not looking at the big picture. Nicotine in itself is not nearly as bad for you physically or psychologically as say alcohol or ......... The real problem with nicotine till date has been its delivery system. Analogs have so much in them that seem designed to kill you that its not even funny. Yet for 100s(?) of years that has been ok? I mean put up no smoking signs here and there and call it a day.

Now we have a way to get that nicotine fix and circumvent every single side effect that could be associated with smoking and this somehow has everyone that can hold a test tube questioning its worth?

How about this, its cheaper than analogs, and if you can get a smoker to smoke 150 packs less than they would typically have smoked in one year then to me thats a very big deal. Honestly, if i were them, I would replace every no-smoking sign with a vaping allowed sign and then they can watch 90% of the smokers worldwide convert. Win win if you ask me.

I totally agree with you guys. I put a pretty scathing review of this so called "study" on my blog unlearnaddiction.com if you want to read it. It is amazing these people get away with this and the press is willing to be complacent with it. But to be fair to them I really would like to see the original document/study/statement but I cannot find it anywhere.

I looked for it too - but I doubt you'll find it. It was a report done for the Italian Health Ministry - and hasn't been made publicly available. They don't have it on their own website either. I trawled through their stuff and its not there.
In a way that's good too - because they are not putting it out there for critique - so it must be rather easily shown to be faulty.
As far as I can tell it was more like an opinion piece - not a published article in a journal. Probably like a submission.
