Daphne has lived, at best estimate, over 20 years. She had two other humans before me and I got her in 98/99. Daphne has been a super affectionate kitty, to us and other kitties. She spent over 10 years sleeping on my pillow and licking my forehead, eyebrows and once my eyelashes, trying to clean me while I slept. She's always been vocal about her opinion on can cat food. For a few years, Daphne was an outside/inside kitty and she was truly happy killing things, sleeping on the front porch and defecating on the neighbor's chairs for fun.

It's been a fun and happy ride for Daphne but she's gotten much older in the past year. Slowly she has lost weight, gotten weaker, stopped cleaning herself and doesn't really care about anything other than can cat food and doesn't always finish that. She wobbles when she walks and can't even balance to stand on your lap.
After much discussion, we are taking her to be put to sleep today. I don't want her to suffer. She’s had a luxurious meal of the most expensive can cat food that I could find, lots of petting and snuggling and is on the porch taking a nap. To her, it’s the best day of her life. For me, this sucks.

Aww Enid, This breaks my heart but know you have been a blessing to her, and you are not doing the "easy" thing but you are doing the right thing. I have been blessed with the most awesome and loyal animal babies and I can only hope I am as good to them as they have been to me. Bless you for giving her a home and for the courage to let her go. Big hugs to you!

Edit- I just looked at her pic's and she is just beautiful!

(((HUGS))) Oh Enid I can honestly say I am feeling your pain. There have been a few special furbabies that I've had to comfort in their final moments and it is never easy though in your heart and in their eyes you know it is the right thing to do.If you want there is a site ,Rainbows Bridge, that you may find some comfort there.God bless you Enid; You will be in my thoughts and prayers today.

Thanks everyone. I just need to keep telling myself that it's the right thing. It helps to hear it.

I feel for you Enid. Been there and done that..it is never easy saying goodbye to family. But there is excitement that when you're day arrives, Daphne will be one of the first friends to welcome you home. Keep smiling and be happy knowing Daphne is feeling just like that young active kitty she once was. :thumb:

Letting her go is surely one of the hardest things you've ever done - and one of the most loving things you'll ever do. What a blessing that you had so many wonderful years together. Maybe tonight, look up at the night, and wonder - perhaps they are not stars that you see in the sky, but rather tiny openings where Daphne shines down on you to let you know she is happy.

I'm so sorry to hear that, brought tears to my eyes. One of my fur babies could pass for your baby's twin, I know he's old and it scares me. You're a very brave woman, not sure I could do what you're about to, but knowing your baby is no longer in pain should help a little. I'm glad he's having the best day of his life at least, lots of cuddles and pics today I hope :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words. She went peacefully at 1:30 today.
We had previously done a hormone profile (for thyroid) and multiple diabetes tests. I never knew her true age but she was well over 20. Michael, my ex, got her in 92 and she was a few years old then. She came to live with me when he was going to grad school in 98/99 and never left :) She was an only kitty at Michael's and was much happier living at my house with more people and other kitties.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
