I'd agree a short, listen to your brother. Either you have a lead touching your top cap, your coils are touching a post or the coil is touching the top cap.
Look at the coil is it touching anything with the top cap off? is the coil within the diamter of your deck? Maybe attach a picture if you can so we can see.

Stop firing it first until someone can help you here, I don't use mechanicals.
It's bad if it's hot and your battery sounds like it's trying to vent. Stop firing it if you want to keep your fingers.
And you need to provide more info:
Six wraps of what guage wire?
What kind of battery?
Was the coil put on an ohm reader?

Duncan, hot is BAD! Hot is a warning that something is very wrong. Don't vape with it. Take it outside and let it cool off. Then, take off the top cap and ask your brother (who seems to know something about coils) look at it. If he doesn't know what he's looking at, bring the mod back to the vape shop tomorrow, and start again. And perhaps you could ask the vape shop what you need to be looking for. I'm not trying to be a PITA, but it isn't a good plan to use a mech if you don't have at least a rudimentary knowledge of coil building, battery safety and Ohms Law. We want you to vape safely!

Hello and welcome to the forum Duncan. Glad to have you here!:)
To quote Baditude (our resident battery expert): "Read up. It's homework time!":toast:

If you are new to mech mods and rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding battery safety, Ohm's Law, amp draw and how they all work together so you can vape safely are listed below:

BATTERIES

Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

Purple Efest Batteries not as Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

Firstly, good for you for seeking advice and then (so it would seem) following it in terms of staying safe for tonight.

The mech mod you have comes with an obligation (to yourself and, potentially, others near you) to do the learning and be able to maintain it (as it would any of us). Susan's links above are a good starting place.

Now, don't want the hassle? Cool beans. Invest in a regulated mod with protection for things like shorts and battery drain. You'll get just as good a vape - plenty of devices can handle that .3ohm build just fine. For many, many vapers, they're preferable to mechs and they invest their time and energy in the atty and the build.

As for the atty/build you have there, well, that comes with an obligation, too. Ohm's Law, short troubleshooting, meters, wicking, and on and on (again, reference Susan's links). Big headache? Too much to deal with? Could be, might not be. That's up to you. If it is, there are several subohm tanks out now that get you in the realm of what you have in your hand right now (or rather, on the desk... with the battery taken out... because of some issue related to the aforementioned hassle stuff). Kanger Subtank, Aspire Nautilus, Joyetech Delta II - good, good tanks for more "extreme" vaping. The subtank and delta also have rebuild platforms so you can dive into build on them if you want.

Don't mean to come off all preachy on ya (prolly too late, tho) - just want you to get what you want out of vaping without incident and/or getting stuffed up like you are now.
