Zupreem Monkey Biscuit – nutritional content:

Ground corn, Soybean meal, Cracked wheat, Sucrose, Wheat germ meal, Animal fat (preserved with BHA, propyl gallate and citric acid), Dried whole egg, Dicalcium phosphate, Calcium carbonate, Iodized salt, Vegetable oil, Choline chloride, Stabilized ascorbic acid (source of Vitamin C), Ethoxyquin (a preservative), Ferrous sulfate, Zinc oxide, Copper chloride, Manganous oxide, Cobalt carbonate, Calcium iodate, Sodium selenite, Vitamin A supplement, uVitamin D3 supplement, Vitamin E supplement, Thiamine (Vitamin B1), Niacin, Calcium pantothenate, Pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Folic acid, Biotin,Vitamin B12 supplement.

The squirrel supply place says: "Zupreem monkey biscuits are nutritionally balanced and provide the nutrients for proper growth. Start your squirrel eating them as soon as they can have solid foods. Leave some in their cage at all times. Also good for teething." (she has all 4 teeth now, btw, and I might be a little scared )

I'll start offering her veggies and small amounts of fruit and nuts after she's eating these biscuits well. :) She'll also be on the formula for several more weeks. The thing I most want to secure for her is that her nutrition is complete to avoid MBD.

"MBD is a complex disease with many etiologies. However, it is primarily due to poor husbandry, feeding an improper diet. Since the rehabilitator will most likely encounter the dietary form of MBD, only the nutritional-induced MBD will be discussed. The most common dietary errors are not enough calcium in the diet, too much phosphorous, too much protein and too many fruits."

*makes note to by femur bone from pet store for Baby to chew on and vitamin drops for water when weaned.

I don't know you well enough, but have you been working on your butch skills a bit? It sounds like these little critters may be a bit fem. Try lowering your voice a little?

Trouble, you're a riot!

Yes, Baby will go through a "soft release" when she's old enough. This is how the other squirrels in my life were released and it worked out great.

"Soft release is basically the only acceptable way to release a squirrel, and it involves moving the squirrel gradually from indoor cage to outdoors, to allow time for her to acclimate herself to the rain, wind, and sounds of nature. First she would be out for just the day, then after a few days to all night as well, then after a week or two you would open the enclosure and let the squirrel come and go at will until it is ready to build a nest and live in the trees."

Yes, been there, done that. :( But...there is great satisfaction in knowing that a needy wild baby animal was well cared for and then allowed to live wild as it was intended to. Tucker was 7 months old before he decided to go wild and stopped coming back here. The first two that I help raise, the male went off on his own but the female stayed for years in the tree in the back yard of my parents home and raised many of her own babies there. Maybe Baby will hang around. :)

Ripple - one morning DS#3 & I were looking out our window at some birds gathered on a large boulder/rock on a ridge about 50 yards away. Looked like pigeons from here. Out of no where down swooped a hawk snagging one of the birds in a *puff* of feathers!

DS (not quite 3 at the time) whipped his head around to look at me and spreading his hands out in the world wide gesture for WTF? said "What Happened?!?"

I've also had to call the neighbor when the same hawk started parking his tail feathers on top of their house whenever she let their mini-pinchers out. You could see the bird doing the math in his head on what speed and angle he needed to snag one!

She won't be going outside for a long while yet, but yeah, the birds of prey around here are a definite threat. We believe that's how she got on the ground where she was found in the first place....dropped by a bird, as there wasn't a nest in any of the trees (and really no trees near enough anyway).

She's doing great today. At midnight last night, she got up and got herself a midnight snack. We could hear her chewing on a monkey biscuit. She also is looking more like a squirrel today as she got her skinny little tail up vs it just being straight out or wrapped around her body. Lookin' good! :)

OK, she's officially the ! (who won???)

Livi and I were headed up the stairs tonight for brush teeth/bedtime and Baby let out this horrific screech and scared my baby so bad she jumped and almost fell down the stairs! I caught Livi and steadied her (hell, I jumped too, startled me just as bad!), then she yells "It's bat, Mommy!" and has this horrified look on her face and tears start to well up in her eyes (we just watched a program about bats a couple of days ago) and I scooped her up real quick and told her "No, it's not a bat, it's Baby telling us she's hungry." which clamed her down, but still, that squirrel about made my child pee in her pull-up! Mercy!!

Yeah, anything that almost sends my kid down a flight of stairs is the  for sure! And...now that Baby has found her voice, she's already screeched like that again! Kinda hoping she's loving the solid food REAL SOON so she'll just have food available and this (please dear God!) will stop. Beth is going to FREAK when she hears her do it!
