These are specially made for Correctional use and have been implemented in a few county jails, there is no metal tube, about the same amount of wire that comes in a standard set of headphones and is non-reusable. The counties are making money because by nature they do not produce a revenue. Anything to take a burden off the tax payers I am all for.
This all being said I am a Sergeant at a County Detention Center and I have seen Weapons made from everything. This being designed for a correctional center is a big step and I want to see this project succeed.

Now that's cool! I'm sure most of us had no idea those existed.

But ya' know, I don't believe for a minute that 99.9% of people that are in jail are there because they're fine upstanding citizens.

I have not been to jail, none of my family or friends have been to jail ('cept one who had to do weekends for a dui). It's not normal or acceptable or some right of passage. Jail is punishment, so sorry if the only things that can be brought in must be bought there. I've seen contraband smuggled in some interesting stuff (colostomy bag, anyone?) so I fully agree with the policy even if there is an outrageous mark-up.

while i agree that most people in jail are not "fine upstanding citizens" as pointed out many of them are in for first time mandatory minimum drug offenses. I strongly believe that mandatory sentencing should be abolished. the united states has the highest per capita prison poplulation in the world, many of whom are non violent offenders that failed to accept a plea bargain for something because they believed they would get a lesser sentence from the judge or be found not guilty. IMHO drug crimes should be relegated to some type of treatment program, not given more prison time than the pedophile who kidnapped and murdered a little kid from their bedroom. Sorry for the rant very, very, very bad day
and no i personally have never been to jail so i have no personal issue with the us correctional system.

Somebody watched snitch. It was an eye opening movie even for someone that has worked corrections for 8 years. I will beg to differ though half of the people I get in my small jail are normal hard-working people that made a mistake they have Spouses, Kids, Jobs even homes. There are a few people that just love being in here however and are a constant pain in my side. But I am eager to try out something that would ease there nicotine addiction and there bad attitudes. And as an extra bonus ease the burden off of the tax payer.

It is actually quite difficult to go to jail for simple possession- unless it is a 'hard' drug. Almost impossible. There are always pleas and first offender options, treatment options, etc. When it gets to sales and trafficking, maybe not so many options, other than jail.
Oddly, if one chooses to do certain things in their own home, doesn't sell any or give any away, or commit other crimes while on them, they will never get caught.
