Just got my Joye 510 the other day. I'm loving the first drags off it - then... after what doesn't seem like a long time - my cart seems to dry up and I'm left smoking plastic. I got it Thursday night, I am a LIGHT smoker, the cartridges they came with lasted approximately 20-30 drags at most (and I'm a three second dragger... definitely nothing more). By Friday on the way home from work I was already on my third cart (and I do NOT sit at the desk puffing away all day). Is this amount of time expected for the 510 carts? Did I just get faulty carts? Do I have faulty atomizers? Any help or direction would be much appreciated!

Unfortunately you have been sucked in by the 1 cart = 1 pack myth. It is not nor has it even been true. Not your fault, too many suppliers perpetuate this fallicy.

20-30 draw before needing to refill is perfectly normal, especially with the smaller carts on the 510.

Do NOT buy prefilled carts. you will go broke doing this.
Refill your used carts.

Post again here if you need help to do this.

Good Luck, the 510 is a fine unit.

I only started vaping about 10 days ago, but I understand your pain!

What I find interesting is that, one cotton-filled cartridge of 510's seems hold between 13-15 drops of liquid, from bone-dry to pooling at the top. Yet when I start "sucking plastic" (GREAT description!) as you say, and I add more drops to my cartridge, I can only add 3-5 drops before it starts pooling.

It seems to me that the wicking in these isn't terribly efficient.

I end up topping off a cartridge 2-3 times a day, for a total of about 10-15 drops being vaped every day.

Not too shabby, if I do say so myself, if the estimates of 20 drops ~ 1 mL are more or less accurate. To check myself and my poor maths skills... I've got about 1/3 of my 12 mL bottle left, so 2 weeks of vaping used 8 mL, or thereabouts (and several cartridges are filled and waiting.)

Soon as the sore throat thing passes, I'll be home free!

Good luck!

Between using the straw mod linked to above and changing my filler frequently, I have been able to make my carts a bit more efficient. It doesn't get out every last drop of juice, but it does seem to do better than regular OE carts. I also substitute tea bags for filler from time to time, they tend to wick quite efficiently it seems.

I would also recommend this for easier and better refilling...
Precision Oiler - Needle Tip Oiler Bottle 1/2 oz.

I keep one at home and one at my desk at work.

I use that with the carts that I haven't modified but with the cart modification it isn't the best way, imo, since it fills from the bottom and the cart mod uses the space on the bottom for the air flow. My fillers in the mods doesn't reach the bottom so juice would pool there and not wick up. More testing needed but that's my take so far.... I'm open to be convinced otherwise. As it is I'm getting double+ the topoff drips with the mod than before.

I'm sure you're right, as the straw modification probably depends on having an air pocket at the bottom of the cartridge below the filler, if only for improved wicking, but maybe not so much for improved filling.

I tried a straw modification before I got these handy needle droppers, and I was able to drop much more liquid in when topping off, but the wicking action did not seem to be improved. I don't think I had an air pocket at the bottom though.

I'm still debating whether or not I want to mess around with my filler enough to try the straw modification again some day. The improved wicking would be a huge benefit.

The air pocket does seem to drive the system. As the liquid is filled, the air escapes through the straw even if you've poured over the straw the air still bubbles up and each bubble bursting allows more liquid - it's why I'll drop three or four into the filler then 2 on the atty and go back to the filler to give time for the bubbling. And the wicking seems better or I'll put it this way, less times filling with the cart mod and without it a top off is 3 drops max and then sometimes waiting to put in the last one - the air can't escape fast enough through the filler alone, it seems.

What I did was measure a straw (quetip shaft) that I though was at the right level in the cart and it measured 11/16, so I just cut a bunch of them for about 10 carts. You have to make sure you don't cut the length when you cut the diagonal. Then cut about an 1/8 of an inch off the filler so there is the air space and stuff them in together. I take a pick and even off the top tucking any filler strands around the straw and sniping any loose ones with the scissors. One time job - what? 1/2 hour tops and they pretty much are maintenance free (other than a weekly cleaning). I did that many carts because I'm still 'sampling' flavors. Otherwise, say 2 per ecigarette should suffice.

For example I just filled one ecig with my favorite menthol Janty's Newport. It took 4 drops immediately waited a second another drop - now pooling but the bubbling from the straw, 2 drops on the atty, 4 more drops in the filler but for those I'm angling the cart at 45 to 70 degrees (it won't drip out) with the straw on top to clear it for the bubbling. Last two drops take a few seconds.... I'll be vaping that for a while.

I know you get this but others may find the step by step helpful. :)

Refill your carts. Full refill 1 or more times per day and the rest of the tip you can probably just add some juice to the top.

And buy the blue foam stuffing at strictlyejuice.com - it's precut for 510 carts. When the white stuffing in a cart get old and cranky, try the blue foam instead. With blue foam it's easy to do a full fill - take the stuffing out, fill the juice cup 1/2 way, put the stuffing in tapered end first and push it into the liquid. Reposition to even at the top edge of the juice cup and top off with 2-3 drops. And top off with juice whenever it seems a bit dry or the atomizer is getting extra hot.

And try cartomizers - disposable bigger screw-on carts with atomizer inside. Cartos hold more, are vapable longer before they need juice. Fill one well to start then add more when vapor seems dry or light - keep it damp and a carto can last 4-7 days or even more. For the simplest beginner cartos try Boge soft-cap (standard resistance needs to be used on 510, not LR which is for fat-battery 510's). I mostly use my 510 with cartomizers. Warning though - if you bought auto batteries, then yoru batteries have a hole in the threaded end where the drag sensor is - if you drip juice on that you can kill your battery. I recommend manual batteries if you will be using cartos or dripping. Or at least buy a spare battery in case you kill one.
