You may have over saturated the filler. To check, just put the carto, tip end down without the tip, in a small dish or something to protect the surface underneath, and let it sit for a while. Any excess liquid will flow out and you'll avoid that gurgle and wet drags that don't taste very good. I did that a few times in my attempts to maximize carto fills.

Keeping the end caps on helps keep the liquid fresh and does reduce any possible evaporation. The one with the plug is considered the battery end, but I don't think it really matters IF the carto is not overfilled. Safest policy is to put it on the battery end. Just my opinion, worth what it costs, your mileage and results may vary, no warantee or guarantee expressed or implied.

I use the plug one on the connector end out of habit, but it really doesn't matter. I also leave the mouth end with no cap. None of these will be sitting around long enough to dry out or get dusty, and when I carry them they are in the PCC so nothing dirty ever is around them. If you were going to stick them in your pocket then I'd put both caps on.

putting a paper towel between the battery and the carto, and screwing them together with the paper towel in between, works well for me :)

I'd be really careful with that technique. The extra thickness of the paper towel can push the center posts in too far and conceivably short them out. That can be corrected by lifting the posts, but if the little gasket on the battery ends up damaged, there goes the seal that protects it from liquids.

been doing it for a year on my 30 plus bats, and never noticed that prob. Though depending on the carto, I regularly have to pull up that post anyway.

But it really cleans up those threads :)

Metal really doesn't matter much. If it's a manual battery there is no power to the center post unless the button is pushed. If it's an auto battery there's now power unless the air flow switch gets activated, kind of unlikely since there's not carto/CE3 or whatever on it/ Some care does need to be exersied to make sure you don't damage the little silicon seal for the center post, but that's a very minor consideration.
