Hi all, I'm new to the forums here. I had a question about which strength of nicotine juice to use, as well as how much of it to vape daily. When I smoked real cigarettes, I averaged about 13 per day. I would like to keep at that level of nicotine to start with. I read somewhere that although real cigarettes contained 9mg of nicotine each, the body only ingests 1 mg each (due to burnoff, ect). So would this mean that in order to maintain previous levels, I should use a 12mg strength juice and vape 1ml of it per day? I am new to vaping, so please correct me if I am misinformed. Thanks in advance to all who respond.:)

Hi and welcome!

Vaping doesn't quite work that way. You body absorbs nicotine differently from smoking, so they don't equate to each other. You pay more attention to how you feel, as opposed to how many mg of nic you've ingested. If you haven't had enough, you will still want to smoke. I always recommend new vapers get lots of juice samples to try, and 13 cigarettes per day is kind of low (compared to me anyway, I was 1.5 PAD), so while 12mg may be about right, you might want to get some 6mg too to see what appeals to you.

Cheers!

Dear Bottom Line,

There are too many variables to accurately tell you how much to vape on a daily basis. Changing nic levels by vaping less is one method, but getting into making your own juice (DIY) is the preferred method for many of us. Most users start way too high and cut back to a preferred level. Personally I smoked about a pack a day for over 50 years and started with 24 mg nic per ML and quickly went down to 18, then 12 and now I mix my own at about 6. I am a chain vaper, so I still have no idea how much I get each day. I have tried zero nic and it also works for me, so eventually I will most likely just vape VG and flavorings.

I know this does not help a whole lot, but I would recommend starting at about the 12 mg nic level and adjust from there. Starting real high will give you a lot of throat hit, especially if the PG ratio is also high.

Thanks for the replies! Okay, sounds like I'm going to have to either dilute the juices I currently have or just vape less until they are gone then. I bought some juices where I purchased my ecig from. After telling them how much I smoked per day, they suggested that I start with 18mg strength. And of course, they were more than happy to give me a "great deal" on juices. So I have three 30 ml bottles of 18mg strength. It does have a rather strong "hit" to it. Should I buy 0mg nicotine forms of the same juices to dilute it some?

I was a pack a day smoker for 32 years. I started with 12mg/ml juices. I now use 18mg/ml when I feel "stressed" or low on nicotine, for example when I wake up. Then I move to 12mg/ml for most of the day. A few hours before I go to bed I use a 9mg/ml to "wind down" with. As to quantity of juice, that seems to vary every day. I'm vaping about 4ml of juice a day or so. Your mileage may vary. The types of devices you use to vape with will impact this as well.

Yes you can certainly buy some 0 nic juice and "cut" the higher nicotine juice with it. If I find my stores have my favorite flavor but in a higher level, I cut with the same flavor in 0mg/ml to reduce to my preference.

Diluting it with zero nic is a possibility. Also, if you find the flavors and hit too strong, you can add a few drops of distilled water to the mix. This will mellow things out a bit.

Or you could just go nuts online and order a bunch of 6mg and 12mg flavors from various vendors. When they show up you just forget about the 18mg and leave them to gather dust in the cabinet until you find a friend who would like them, or pass them along through the forum here :)

I vaped for about 4 months without quitting smoking. I used 18mg nic strength and tobacco flavors. Didn't help me quit at all. I upped the nic strength (was a 1.5 PAD smoked, Marlboro Red) to 24mg and switched to fruity and bakery flavors and quit within a week :) Today is day 10 without an analog.

So what works for one person might not work for others. If you feel like you're getting too much nicotine, order lower strength juices. 18mg is the midpoint on the scale of different strengths, so your vendor didn't steer you wrong or anything. They just gave you the safest answer.

It certainly wouldn't hurt you to try lower strength. If it's not working for you and you find yourself craving analogs, just vape a little more.

Sounds like you went the place on West Colfax. I think they tell "everyone" to start with 18mg. Don't get me wrong, I got my first kit there with some juice and they were very helpful. I've been back a couple of time since but now buy all my stuff online.

Diluting sounds like a good idea. Start with very small amounts first though. I would hate for you to take 30ml of "OK" juice and turn it into 60ml of "bad" juice.

You all are amazing! Thank you for the honest answers and hospitality towards a newbie. On a side note, this is day 4 without a real cigarette for me.

Congrats on making it this far! It actually got easier for me after 3 days. I didn't have intense cravings, but I was just a bit irritable and felt funky. After the first 3 it got a lot better.

You'll find that this is an incredibly friendly forum, and there's soooo much information. Awesome place, really.

Congrats on 4 days The Bottom Line. Awesome! I tried a blu e-cig for a day. I HATED the flavor, but it made me realize that I could live without cigs if I had nicotine. I've had 12 analogs (mostly in the early days) since April 14th, 2013, I have not bought a pack since the blu experiment. Today is my 3rd month anniversary of using e-cigs instead. Saving money? Not yet, but it's well worth the benefits of quitting the cigarettes. I've spent about $400 more than I've saved but, I can breathe, taste, smell, and have a lot more energy. I don't smell like an ashtray and my cars don't either any more.
