Just cottoned my first Kanger coil

Hey guys. I was running out of coils due to some ignorance on dry burning the Kanger dual coils (apparently you shouldn't dry burn these because of the rubber insulator). My new set of coils won't arrive until tomorrow, so I thought "What the hell, let's give this cotton wick thing a try". The only cotton I had laying around were sterilized 100% cotton pads, so no fancy Japanese cotton or anything. I cut a thin as possible strand, rolled it up and ran it through the coil. Holy crap, that was easy! My first attempt did result in flooding, but my second attempt was perfectly sealed.

Taste is good and vapor production is okay, but I do have one problem with it: The draw has become quite a bit stiffer. Protanks are known for their airy draw, but now it's like I sealed off one of the holes. Is this inherent to cotton since it swells when wet? Or did I use too much of it? The air holes are clean, I just checked.

And of course I'll get some good quality yarn as soon as possible. Any recommendations perhaps?

Welcome!

I dry-burn my Kanger coils all the time. You just have to be gentle and pulse the dry burn.

See the links below, as they're all about rebuilding. I've been finding that I need VERY LITTLE cotton to thread the coil. It's usually a loose tuft from a cotton ball, no bigger than my pinkie fingernail (and even that could be too much - you'll start to learn how much is the right amount) Make sure you can slide the cotton through the coil without too much resistance, as the cotton will expand when wet.

Not sure if lightningvapes.com ships internationally, but you can get replacement insulators for a few dollars (I just got some of the silicone ones - still not sure if rubber or silicone is better) Resistance Coil Insulator 10 Pack (CE Type Atty's, eg. Protank, Evod,T - Lightning Vapes

Practice makes infinitely better :) I find that I get a very consistent draw as long as I don't use too much cotton.

Thanks for the welcome and the links. I'll give your tutorial a try. :toast: I also didn't know you could buy new insulators, so that's awesome! I did burn the 'ruined' coils for way too long; multiple burns until the battery cuts off at 7-ish seconds, which was probably enough to damage the rubber insulator. I'll try very short pulses next time. Thanks again for the links.

Also, I only cottoned the top coil since the silica wick in the lower one was still good. Even though it was only the top, it already makes a big difference, good stuff! :D

*Shrugs* I dry burn mine all the time. I've yet to burn the insulator. I'm not even gentile. I just fry away. I started with dry burning my Evod coils. Then I started rewicking them. Now I have an Aerotank. I dry burn that until the wick gets nasty. Then I rewick until the coil won't perform anymore. And then I rebuild a vertical low res single coil and rewick LOL. It's actually shockingly easy to do.

I don't think I've bought any sort of Kanger coil in at least 6 months.

You have a either a little to much cotton in it or to much for a flavor wick. If you have 100% cotton balls unroll one and pull a piece off then twist one end to a point and pull it through just til you feel a little restriction. Then cut it off on each end. I usually just use a small piece of the twisted end for a flavor wick.

If you really want a cool vape with alot of taste get some kanthol wire and wrap your own single coils and wick with cotton.. I build single 1.6 ohm for my aerotank and wick with cotton balls. Ive heard of the other cotton might even try it some day lol.

That's odd, they're dual-coils? Because if they're not, I can imagine that the coil is further away from the insulator. The bottom coil on my dual all but rests on it. It can't imagine what else it could be because the burnt taste was very persistent, even when burned totally clean. Didn't go away at all.

I may have used too much, but this coil is the only functional one at the moment so I'd rather not take the risk of re-wicking it again before I screw something up. I got used to the stiffer draw now. And yes I'll try rebuilding a single coil with Kanthol in the future. You can make a single coil in a dual-coil housing, right?

Forgive me - I didn't notice the "DUAL" coils

Google your coil type, and you'll find ALL KINDS of hints for rebuilding/rewicking....
It's fine. I'll do that and may just go with single coils in the future, they seem to be less of a hassle. Re-aligning both coils was excruciating (I only re-wicked the top coil at first which was indeed easy-peasy).

Yeah I've never had a problem. Maybe I just got lucky with a good batch? Or....do you rinse after you dry burn? I rinse is super hot water after I dry burn. I get a burnt taste sometimes if I don't. My theory is burnt residue on the coil and wicks. But I can't imagine that rubber piece would burn all that easily. I mean, even when submersed in eliquid, it gets pretty hot during use. Hot enough to vaporize liquid. And I've never noticed one to look burnt after I take it apart to rebuild.

Maybe I just got lucky with a good batch? I don't know. Like I said, I don't really buy them. I've just got an original set of two, plus five more that I bought initially.
