Thank you all. I have a bunch of old computers that I'm sure I could use something out of. I will have to take a look at the chargers I have around as well. Do you guys know if a usb type wall wart could be used and a mini usb in the mod itself? I don't know what kind of power those types of connections can handle.

Max VDC in tends to vary between sellers but it seems the usual is up to 25 - 27VDC...the laptop charger isn't really a charger, that's it's remote PSU, the batt charging cct is usually embedded in the laptop batt itself...I like laptop PSU's because they're fanless, dead quiet and usually have a good amp output (some printer PSU's are good too), Xbox PSU's are my next fav, they're a 10 min mod to access the 12v mains and have a 5v standby cct you can put a switch in to turn it off/on and tons of power. ATX PSU's are my least fav. they also have a standby cct but are clumsy, a little ugly and have fan noise but even a low end 350 watt one has enough output to run 10 LM2596's being vaped on simultaneously :D

EDIT: Just a safety tip if this is your first PSU mod...unplug the PSU and let it sit at least overnight before you start cutting/taking it apart...those filter caps (if the discharge resistor is a little dodgy) can give you one hell of a poke, even if it's unplugged.

Yup, that's my perfect PT...and ya, the ATX's can be a little over the top (google atx cable pin-outs, wires everywhere )...don't even stick the reg in a box, just hot glue it to the top of the PSU along with a bunch of other crap...

Nice quigs! To me, exposed pcb's look classy. beauty in its least natural form.. potentially hazardous looking to other people. best way to keep ppl from touching ur stuff! add a couple warning stickers.. i drive a bucket truck for work and it has a high voltage warning on the side with a picture of the lift touching a power line and someone getting shocked on the ground. surprisingly when its parked people see that warning and back away ;)

thats interesting that xbox psu's have the standby switch, gonna have to look into getting one for my passthru. ive got so many things plugged into power strips cuz i dont like leaving transformers/wall worts plugged in. but it still feels clumsy to me, would be nice to have low voltage controls for everything and put an IR sensor in the room that shuts stuff down when no one's around (unless i put it on override for x amount of time). times are tough, need to save power wherever possible.

Ok, through a series of ordering/shipping mishaps/HK sender screw-ups and a whole crap load of time passing I find myself with 10 extra LM2596 modules:

Is there anyone who wants one to play with for free? They're already in Canada, I'll mail them to my US brothers when I'm down in WA (which is every weekend) you'll get it days later...just let me know...

Also, again guys, these 10 are the product of a little "tiff" I had with an ebay seller and his joke of a shipping dept. (not going to mention his name, that was the agreement ;)), suffice it to say I got them free so you get them free, I'll eat the postage... for the amount of solid info I've got off this thread it's a deal (I should be sending them all to BJ, but that would be like shipping Bibles to Mississippi)...btw, Canada/conus only...I'm not spending $15 in postage to send a $2 reg to Poland
