Just purchased my first mod setup!!!

So I'm with a friend, showing off my iTaste CLK 1280 variable voltage battery with an Aspire nautilus atomizer, when he busts out his new shiny copper mod with a dual coil atty. I take a few puffs and instantly I'm sold. Not only is this thing blowing huge clouds, but the taste is waaaay better then what I'm using. I have to have one!

So my friend takes me to a shop called Pure Vapor in Fontana, CA. It was a Sunday afternoon, the place was empty, and they didn't have a huge selection of gear, but they did have a really nice carbon fiber mod that caught my eye. I told the sales person I'm knew, but wanted a whole kit. So for $170+ he put together a Fuhatton mod (brass + carbon fiber), a stainless steel Plume Veil clone, a small bottle of ejuice, one battery, and a charger.

The guy at the shop seemed really cool, but I noticed the atty is a smaller diameter then the mod. The atty is 22mm and the mod is 24mm. I also noticed the atty doesn't screw down all the way. There is a 1-2 mm gap. Is this normal? I guess it doesn't matter, after all it does works great. Although I do seem to be having a tiny bit of buyers remorse. Was really hoping everything would match and line up perfectly. I'm on eBay right now and really thinking about buying another mod, but I've only had this mod a day. So yeah I don't know why I'm unhappy, but I kinda am (First world problems, right?).

The guy at the shop built the coil, wicked it, tested it, and gave me to me ready to vape. And boy did I get an amazing first vape! Hoping I can build my own coils by the end of the week. Just one more thing I thought was odd and wanted your guys feedback... he build the coil at 0.3 ohms. I know very little about sub-ohm builds. I've always thought it was an advanced modification best left for people who's been doing this for a while and even then, you shouldn't be going under 0.8 Ohms. Then again, I have no idea.

So..can you guys tell me, is 0.3 Ohms safe and is it typical for shop employees to build you sub-ohm vapes when your just starting out on mech mods? Also, is the 24mm mod thing normal? And can I find 24mm attys for it?

Hello and welcome to the forum Reloader. Glad to have you here!:)

To your question, is it safe? Depends on your batteries. What battery are you using (brand, mah, amp limit)?

I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding mech mods and rebuildables are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

17. Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

7. Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

15. Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA Setup
* A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and where to find them.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

!00% agree with Susan. Your mod probably has an adjustable center pin and maybe the atti to. Im not that familiar with it but most do. The .3 thing seems to be the norm lately. I don't agree with it but as long as you have the proper equipment and are familiar with its capabilities its not that bad. Follow what Susan said and you should be fine

Good on you for asking the questions!
Susan has pretty much covered the battery topic for you, so I'm gonna let that ride... only thing I'm gonna add there is: Read what she posted. Follow the links and read those too. The safety of your build is greatly dependent on the batteries that you use!

Bad shop... he should have gone over all of that with you before sending you out with a .3 ohm build... 0.3 isn't necessarily bad (that's what is in the one I'm vaping right now!), but I've got the right batteries, the right measuring equipment, and I build my own coils and wicks... in other words, I've done the homework and I know what I'm working with... you can get there, but you should probably read through Baditude's blog before you go any further... I'd recommend putting the mech down until you've done that...

I am not familiar with any 24mm atomizers... most of the atomizers for 18650 size mods are 22mm...
You can adjust that 1-2mm space between the atomizer and the mod though... you'll have to take off the top of the mod, screw the atty all the way down, then adjust the positive post screw inside the top of the mod that touches the top of your battery to get rid of any battery rattle...

Most of us experience buyer's remorse at some point in our lives... the only way around that is to do the research before the purchase... sorry for your first world problems, man... been there, done that, got the t-shirt... you're just playin' reruns... ;)
