For a first time rebuildable I like the IGO-L, very simple and straight forward. It is also cheap, $14-$20, and large so easy to work with, still use mine all the time. Cotton yarn you can get from Walmart or fabric stores for a couple of dollars. I suggest RTD for your resistance wire and battries.

Note for cotton (I know I said I was done but ) Just make sure you get 100% unbleached dye free. Peaches and Cream brand from Walmart is recommended a lot here on ECF, I got mine (different brand) at Fred Meyers. To make sure the cotton has no extras (plastic fibers etc.) do a burn test:

Take a small length and lite it, cotton burns when dry. It should smell like burning paper and the ash should be powdery. If you get a plastic smell or hard residue in the ash do not use it.

Again hope this helps, and you may want to read up in the Rebuildable Atomizer Systems section for many many more tips and tricks. Have fun!

I didn't soak it in alc or boil it. does that make a big difference?

Yarn often contains 'sizing', a starch sprayed on in manufacturing. Not sure what the differences are if you leave it on and vape with this starch on your wick, but most recommend boiling it for 15+ minutes to remove it. Thats why I use butchers twine ... 100% pure cotton, no bleach, no sizing.

Glad to hear it is working out for you, just for fun try a "microcoil" (saw super_X_drifters coils and had to try). I now build all my coils this way now but have never tried it with silica..

View attachment 214209 (edit) that is 28 gauge kanthal A1, hence the many wraps..

Ibocpro, I haven't seen a coil that tight before- ever. It is impressive. I was under the impression that you would want space between wraps. I never read that anywhere, just assumed. Where can I learn about these 'microcoils?'

I just watched a video on the IGO-L from pbusardo. I really like the looks of it, and I know I could do that. I'm just hoping it will work on my ego twist. I have a couple different size thread cover things that flare out and make it look better when using things like the vivi nova or kanger protank. It's like a flared out collar that just makes it look more seamless. I'm guessing it would work on the igo-l too.

super_X_drifter here on the forums in the rebuildable section posted his results by doing the "microcoil", so here at ECF is where I learned. I also thought the coils needed to be spaced out, but then I tried it and Holy Catapults Batman! it works really well.

What I do is wrap a coil on a machine screw:

Then attach it to the RDA, remove the screw, test Ohms, and if all is good give it a short burn. Next I use twezzers to pack the coils togerther so it looks like:

I burn it then as the coil cools I squeeze them together. That's my process :p

Is the popping sound bad? because i am getting it in my nimbus dual coil.. but it still hits awesome!!
welcome treetrimmer!

I have been rebuilding coils for a while now, getting better all the time, and have had similar "popping" that you describe. I use cotton for my wicks and mainly build RDA's and not so much for the Protanks or Novas. Some of my coils would really pop, like loud and strong. I found that my coil was a little too tight on the wick and was pinching into the material. I then started using a die to pre-wrap and then would pull the cotton through the coil, this allowed the cotton to just fit and after swelling with juice the popping was reduced and now just the wonderful crackling of vaporizing juice (well little pops from time to time but no mini-explosions). With silica pulling or pushing it through would be tough so I would say use a large ish needle in the silica while wrapping your wire, then when you have your coil ready pull the needle out. This will give a little room for you wick and should also help it wick better.

Mainly it is trial and error, keep at it and try new things. Glad to hear that you are testing your builds first now, that can be a bummer for a device without protection.. Anyway I am sure there will be more and better tricks and tips you will find here or offered by those with more experience but I hope this helps a bit. :toast:

I am so relieved to see this thread! I changed out the head on my ProTank two days ago, and when I went to toss it in the trash my hubby got all excited and told me he was gonna rebuild it! Hubby doesn't vape! Or, smoke! He just wants to save the $$. I've only watched one video on it (Grimmgreen's video on the ProTank), but I was feeling rather uncomfortable being his guinea pig! "Here honey, let me know how this vapes!" Subscribed so I don't have to Lurk! :) Thanks, everyone! Congratulations treehugger!

Thanks supertrunker for the link, could not find it  gotta give the credit..

As for a primer hit, a little but not much perhaps. I think since the coils are so close together they heat faster and so there is less "warm up" time. K, just tested it out and I do use a quick puff or two and then take my main hit. Hard to remember what you actually do with a habit :)
