My First Protank Recoil. Weird ohm readings.

Hi Folks,

I finally received an ohm reader in the mail that I had ordered from fasttech and immediately tried building a coil for my protank. I am using 2.2ohms NR-R-NR pre-welded Nichrome from fasttech.

I built the coil with 10 wraps, wicked it and reattached the chimney and popped it into the ohm reader and got a reading of 0.30ohms. It fluctuated a bit and finally settled at 0.37ohms.

I removed the chimney and tried again without readjusting the coil and it read 2.2ohms. Reattached the chimney and it dropped down to 0.4ohms.

After readjusting the coil a bit it stabilized at 2.10ohms, tried it a few times and it has remained constant now.

I am uncertain why this would be happening in the first place, perhaps it was shorting?

Any help is much appreciated.

I saw this one thing saying that you need to dry fire your coil a few times and pinch it a little with some pliers until it starts heating red from the inside going to the out.
I don't know if you've done this already but if not it might be the reason for the weird readings.

And again I am new to vaping myself and this is just something I saw in a video so do some research yourself before you take my word for anything. lol

The chimney was perhaps causing the coil to move and short itself?

Agreed.. It definitely sounds like the chimney was either shorting the coil itself (is the coil really high?) or it was pushing down on the wick and causing it to push into a post or the deck... Either way, it was definitely disturbing something and causing it to short somewhere... I'd pull it apart and just go over the whole thing again and make sure everything is out of the way and there aren't any areas that could easily short... You don't want to get it all filled and ready to go and then a little bump causes it to short out and have to tear it all down again... :)

I think it was due to the coil being to high. It start behaving normally after I pushed it down. I was unsure if the chimney could cause that ohms to drop that drastically.

I got this one working for now. Also have a bunch of coil heads that I will be practicing on.

I never threw any away, as I wanted to try recoiling them.

You can adjust it lower or higher to change the taste/throat hit but it's a very small window depending on the tank...

I din't consider that the position could affect the taste.

I built two more coils. No problems this time and the taste and vapor production is mind blowing.

I have been re-wicking for a couple of months, but this is superb.

Getting a few RBA's and a new mod in the next week. Can't wait...

Awesome! There's nothing better than hitting that sweet spot with a build and having that EUREKA! moment! What's even more amazing is when you have one of those moments and then you hit another one that blows away the first! :) wash, rinse, repeat!

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the general rule of thumb is this... The FURTHER away from the airhole the coil is, the more throat hit you will get... The closer to the airhole the more flavor you will get... But the best thing is just to play around with it...

When I was first experimenting with it, what I did was to build a coil and have it fairly high off the airhole... (this meant my tails were long enough to lower it). Saturated the wick and popped the tank back together but didn't fill it... Then just vaped a couple hits... opened it up, dropped the coil way down (make sure to keep tails up and not shorting) and did the same again.... then moved back to the middle... it gave me a good idea of how it affected the TH and taste without any other factors changing... from there I just kinda settled on a spot and that's what I do in all my builds now... which generally is about 2mm or just a hair less...

I am currently using a 1/16 drill bit with 9/10 wraps of 30 gauge Kanthal. It usually comes in 1.8 to 1.9 ohms resistance. Using organic cotton for wick and coils are micro.

To position the coil I found it easier to reinsert the drill bit in the coil and let the drill bit rest on the bottom of the holder while I fasten the leads. The height always seems proper doing it that way. This works if your using cotton or rayon, it's a pain in the .... if your using silica although I've seen people do it.

Anyway, by using the drill bit for height, all you need to watch for is that the coil is centered.

Good Luck! :)

I ussually do 8 wraps of 32 Guage kanthal and make dual coil on a 1/16th bit. Ussually is about 1.5 to 1.6 ohm on the protank mini 3.

Works well.

Havnt had any shorting issues but wiuldnt doubt its the cgimney if you are having shorts.

What do you do to fill that extra space that the second coil would normally take up? I've seen people make an oval shaped coil with two drill bits, but have yet to see or hear of anyone just filling the void with cotton.
