Just thought of this build. What do you think??

So I thought of this about an hour ago and have never seen it done before (although I'm sure it has). I have a Mutation X V3 and thought of doing dual quad kanthal with huge coils.... VERTICALLY! I thought to myself.. "no this isn't possible. It's just going to touch something and short. It's going to be too tall. Blah blah blah."

Well it is possible! Barely....

The build consists of 4 strands of 28 gauge kanthal wrapped parallel 9 times around a 3/32 drill bit. With two of those the build should weigh in around ~0.2 Ohms.

This isn't the neatest wrap I have done especially because the coil had to be twisted vertically which caused the kanthal to overlap a bit in certain places. I got it so they were glowing very nicely from the inside out. Again, not too proud of the neatness of the coil.

At this point I had an idea that I knew would be difficult to execute, but decided to try it anyways. One single piece of cotton running through both coils and onto the deck. Fed from the top downwards. I wanted a bridge between both coils at the top so gravity would pull the juice downwards instead of the usual gravity fighting style that most builds use (not that there is any problem with those builds). It took a little time, but I eventually got it.

At this point I took a piece of kanthal and started fluffing the ends a bit since I had to twist them hard for the long run downwards through both coils. This way they would be able to fill up the entire space on the deck. I tucked the ends of the cotton into the deck and juiced her up!

Here is a picture with the walls of the RDA attached. Close fit!

After having a nice vape!!

I have to say I'm pretty proud of myself since I've only been using RDA's for a couple weeks now. I've become a coil addict and have made a new one every day, but this is the first one I thought of doing myself. I'm sure something like this has been done before, but I've never seen it myself.

The flavor is there, the vapor is there, there's a little ramp up time since the coils are so large, but at 79.3W/4.4v you barely notice it. Even at lower wattages it is still a pretty quick ramp up. Resistance is 0.2 Ohms and it allows me to get more hits without filling it up as much even though it still spits clouds!

I DUB THEE...

THE DUAL TORNADO COIL

Vape on my friends! :vapor:

the mutation x was actually the first build ive done vertical coils in. they fit real nicely if you get the length of the coil correct, because you can put one lead into the centerpost hole, then the other lead will be the same height as the top screw, so you can use the screw itself to trap the lead on top of the posts. I've tried doing them as long as u just to mess around, but the problem I had is I use 22-24gauge kanthal and had bunch of issues with the leads touching the wraps and uneven heating.

Haven't seen that much kanthal vertically yet.

If you can get some flat needle nose pliers I'd suggest pre-bending the leads to fit the post holes, will cause less deforming since you're wrapping with a lot of strands. Also, secure the coils tight to the middle then take your wrapping tool back in the coil to pull then outward. It will even out your wraps. You must have had some patience with that one, so good job.

If you like doing different stuff you could take that same coil and make each side into a dual coil in series, effectively giving you 4 coils with the same amount of wire and resistance. Two coils in series are two coils on the same length of wire sharing the same positive and negative connection. Imagine wrapping one long coil and bending it in the middle making two smaller coils. Can't say it would be easy with parallel wires.

Thanks for all the kind words guys! All of you were MUCH nicer than the people on reddit!!

I ended up trying something new today. I was able to get these two different coils to glow at the same time. I also used one piece of cotton fed through both coils and going over the top of the screws. I get many more drags with this method of wicking. I get the flavor AND the clouds with this build. It runs at 0.3 Ohms

It's nice to mess around with different builds to see what works. Just make sure when you use two different coils that they have a similar resistance. I think the ohm reader is going to read the lowest regardless. You could potentially get different flavor profiles they way you are doing it, segregated airflow would be cool, but haven't seen that in an atomizer yet.

One suggestion would be to look at the wicking in such a way that you wick without obstructing airflow. I'm sure your build works well, but in some cases cotton over the top or cotton going upward toward the drip tip could hinder the airflow. I guess you could possibly make that work to your advantage too.

If you are building duals the coils NEED to be identical. You can't have one twisted and one regular/ parallel.. they have to be exact same number of wraps also. While this build may be working now, it's an accident waiting to happen. No disrespect to you, and not bashing you. Just telling you if you are doing duals they must be identical for best performance and safety! Don't want to see you fry that mod..

I can see how there might be problems with dry hits but why would it be dangerous?

Haha I ended up changing that other one with different coils on each side. It worked fine and I didn't have any problem with dry hits (I made it so both coils glowed at the same speed even though they were different) but I've been making a new coil every day so I scrapped it and made this:

20150402_194226 by joshfiricano, on Flickr

This is 26 gauge and 28 gauged twisted tightly with 28 gauge wrapped around it "Clapton" style.

20150402_200722 by joshfiricano, on Flickr

I was rather impressed with the flavor. Vapor was good, but not the best I've ever had. Ramp up time wasn't bad for the size! I think the 4 wraps came in at 0.5 Ohms.

Today I'm running 4 strands of 28 gauge twisted with 5 wraps around a 3/32 drill bit and I'm VERY impressed!

I'd actually love to see you do some more experimentation with the mixed style coils. It shouldn't be dangerous in any way, and it's very different from what anyone else (I've heard of) is doing.
