I think most rebuild simply for the cost savings.. You are spending 1/10 of the price to rebuild the wicks yourself, and Kanger is known for not having the most reliable replacement heads.. Also they last for much longer before needing to replace where as the premade ones can be hit or miss (sometimes its 1-2 weeks, other times its 2-3 days)

As far as cons? I don't really think there are any besides trial and error and spending the time to build them.

I rebuild my dual coil pro tank coils with a single 1.8 micro coil from 30 guage and cotton. I think they work better then the dual coils from kanger. I also rebuild my pt2 single coil heads with same build. Dual coils heads are easier to build single coils in. I haven't had any leaks either.

Kanthal you can find for 5-10 bucks on eBay from temco. Cotton from cvs and boil it. Ohm meter maybe 20 bucks or if you have a mod use that till you can't get a meter.

So building a single coil at 1.8ohms would be good to use in place of the 2ohm duals? I also just upgraded to an MVP2.0 so no need for a meter at this point. Also, I understand buying organic cotton balls eliminates the need to boil the cotton, is that correct?

As long as the cotton hasn't been treated with anything there should be no need to boil it. Also another pro would be better taste. I've read a lot on here that people who rebuild their kanger coils actually say that the cotton provides a much better flavor than with the traditional silica wick.

One thing I'm trying to understand myself... What is the difference in the gauges of kanthal wire? IE what is the difference between 26 gauge and 30 gauge? Is it just the width of the wire? Does it provide more resistance?

With wire (Not just Kanthal), higher gauge is higher resistance and smaller in diameter. Lower gauge is lower resistance and wider in diameter.

Just picked up some 32awg Kanthal. Will build a few coils after work tonight. See how it does to get the ohms I am looking for. Honestly though, I don't see me lasting very long in the micro coil rebuild arena. I have already started looking at RDA's and a new mod. Good hell, I am gonna go broke!

A few tips for the very thin and springy 32 gauge... Torch the wire first before wrapping to take some of the springiness out, after wrapping the coil gently compress it with steel tweezers or needle nose pliers and torch again until glowing red (that will make the coil keep the nice tight compressed shape) also having a few tiny gaps in a microcoil is not a deal breaker they still work good, biggest thing is dry firing it and making sure it glows from the inside out evenly without any hot spots.

On your adventure of rebuilding you will find 30 gauge is much easier to coil and use in Kanger coils and 28 gauge is what most people use in drippers (especially if you are planning on a RDA, mech mod and 30 amp IMR batteries to run lower Ohm coils)

I personally rebuild all my Kanger heads because I can't get good consistency from the prebuild kanger heads. The cost savings is just a nice bonus. I've been cycling the same 10 heads for my wife's single coil device for about a year now. In total I've spent $40 over the last year keeping her kangers firing perfectly. That $40 will likely last me another year as well since I have plenty of wire and silica still waiting. The dual coil heads I was using were a little trickier to build, but I use cotton in mine and get much, much better flavor from them. Just can't dry burn them with the wicks in them.

I would have to agree with the others. I started rebuilding mine because I hated the stock Kanger coils. The materials are so cheap I just couldn't resist giving it a shot, I didn't really have anything to lose trying it out. The performance that I get out of my mico-coils is worlds better than the stock coils. I'm wrapping mine with 30 gauge @ 1.8 ohms with cotton and now my PT2 and Evods hit like trucks. Good luck trying it out! :vapor:

You and me both brother! I just got my Vamo v5 on Thursday... Already looking at buying a Kayfun 3.1 clone this week! Why oh why are there so many good things to do with vaping... I want them all!

I literally just built my first coil earlier today. I have a Protank 3 but it uses the same dual coil head as the Aerotank and rebuilding it was simple enough. I also have an MVP 2 so I just used the ohm's reader on that.

Now that I'm vaping on it, I'm wondering why I took so long to start rebuilding my own coils. I've spent around $10 for a replacement pack in the past so many times, and now with about $8 I bought some 32ga kanthal and organic cotton balls, which will last me for a long time. Way longer than a replacement pack would have.

Like others have mentioned, I've also found that a single coil build works just fine in the dual coil Kanger heads. I did 7 wraps with 32ga and got about 2.2/2.3 ohms, which is a little higher than I was looking for, I'll probably try it with 30ga next time.

As for organic cotton, I didn't boil mine and it tastes fine. Maybe I'll try boiling some to see how it compares but you don't have to boil it necessarily.

I've been doing the micro coil with cotton as well, you will be amazed at how much better it tastes. One tip though, just make sure when you put your coil in the head, that it is not touching on any side of the head.My first one was touching, and i burnt up the circuit board in my spare ego,but yeah there is a huge difference in taste going from silica wicks to cotton, well worth it.If you are real careful, you could also pull the wick out of the factory coil and roll in some cotton.I did that with my first one while i was waiting on my roll of kanthal to show up,just have to go slow and easy to get it out without pulling the coil loose.

I've heard the same thing.. boiling doesn't really affect the taste.. I'm going to pick up some organic cotton from CVS which is what my buddy recommended and see how that goes.

Finally got my Kayfun Lite in the mail over the weekend so between re-learning to build that and the PT heads.. I'm going to be busy

Just picked up supposedly the best clone out .. haven't had too much time to mess with it.. the price also just dropped another 5$ down to 45$

pros? Flavor flavor flavor.

Cons? You actually have to spend time to rebuild them, but I view that as a challenge.

I did buy Ekowool when I got myself set up to rebuild, but I prefer working with cotton. Can't say much to the taste difference between Ekowool and cotton as I never got as far as vaping on Ekowool. There is a "break-in" time with cotton, it make take a half dozen hits or more to get past the initial cotton taste. But it is not unpleasant, really and when it fades, sooooo much better than the factory Kanger coils. Honestly, the hardest part of wicking with cotton is learning how much to use.
