So I am getting ready to start building my own coils to replace the dual coils from Kanger for my AeroTank. I am going to start off using 28awg Kanthal, and cotton for the wick. I am only going to start with a single coil and shoot for a 1.8ohm - 2.2ohm range, using my MVP to test the ohms. My questions are as follows, about how many wraps will i need to acheive this range in ohms? What do you guys recomend I use to wrap, small screwdriver? Next question, when a coild starts to go bad, will the ohms change? ie. starting at 2.0ohms, will it drop to like 1ohm when the coild needs to be replaced?

I get 2 ohms with 10 wraps on a small rod with 28ga Kanthal. Generally, the resistance will stay virtually the same as long as the contact points are making good contact with the center insert and the barrel at the bottom contact point. It's kind of left handed, but you can measure the end points while the wire is on the winder until you know how many turns is necessary for a given coil diameter. Try to estimate the cut length using the old coil you remove for the measurement of leg length. Measure resistance at that point while winding.

Go to Hobby Lobby or Amazon and buy this winder. You won't regret it. You'll also need a micro torch to burn off any preservatives and oil on the Kathal and anneal the wire to make it hold the coil shape. I use the 1.83mm and 3.25mm rods depending on the room in the atomizer body.

Micro Torch. You will need some butane. I use the Zippo or Ronson cigarette lighter butane from drugstores. They recommend triple filtered butane, but it's harder to find. Lighter manufactures brag about their butane purity, anyway.

This guy is really good at showing you how to wind coils.

Ok, so next question.... If I stick to a 1.8ohm to 2.2ohm single coil in the AeroTank, am I safe to use the MVP2.0 full range of watts, 6.0-11.0watts?

I wouldn't see any reason why you couldn't go as high as 11 watts, although I'm usually happy toward the 6-8 watt range. Whether you can vape at 11 watts depends mostly on wicking efficiency and airflow. It shouldn't be a problem.

I have all my Kangers changed over, even have one at .8 for Bryce's custard. That's the only one that gets over 10 watt's and chain vaping isn't an option, it get's hot.

You'll be able to vape at 15 watt's with your rebuilds but I don't think you'll have to to get the vape you are looking for out of those coils.

Dave is right, your wick will have problems keeping up, I got a couple throat killers when I first started rebuilding and dry cotton tastes like........ well you know.

Thats what I figured, I have been sitting at 7.5w with the Kanger coils, so I figured I would stay about there. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to fry the MVP somehow.

That would work. You want to stay above 1.3 ohms with an MVP.

Good rebuilding instructions that don't leave anything to assumption: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/clearomizers/396220-kanger-protank-rebuild-33.html#post9844874

Thanks sir, I don't anticipate going below 1.6ohms, but want to cover all my bases, and learn as much as I can

I recently started making my own coils with 30ga Kanthal and cotton for wick. I use a VV Ver 3 and it has the same wattage limitations as your MVP. When using the Kanger coils, 7.5W was usually fine for me, but since making these coils which range anywhere from 1.6 to 2.0Ω 10-11 watts works great. Better vapor and flavor all the way. I am leaning towards the 1.6 to 1.8 as my final target as I like the warmth of the vape there better. I have a 2Ω in right now and I am not nearly as happy with it.

P.S. Buy a separate Ohm meter. $15 and you don't put your MVP at risk. :)

Stopped at my local B&M, picked up some 28 Kanthal and they tossed in a couple cotton ball that they use for their builds. Crashed and burned on the first 2, but finally on the 3rd build, I hit 1.6ohms. I was pretty stoked. Until I took a vape, the ohms bounced up to 3.3. Then it just kept bouncing around. Between 1.3 and 3.2. I took it out fearing the worst. What could cause that?

Coils touching each other can cause varying resistance. Connections to the body and center plug can also make it vary. The connection at the junction of the atomizer and your ecig can also contribute.
