I built my first couple of coils day before yesterday. I neither have ohm meter nor I want to splash my cash ob it. So, I used cotton wick and Kenthal A1 32 AWG (0.20 mm). On one coil 6 wraps on standard toothpick and 5 wraps for second coil. To me 5 wraps was just right.

On my next rebuild, probably this Saturday I will try and compare 5 and 4 wraps. Whatever works out. How many ohms? couldn't care less. Try this, save money, buy more juice.

Also, be prepared to change wick, clean and dry burn coil every couple of days. Of course, this will depend on sweetness and thickness of juice you use.

was the taste better/worse than the store bought coils?

I also read dry burning cotton is a nono.

is there a big different in operation/flavor using silica wick to cotton balls?

Yea, from what i've been reading cotton is the way to go. Awesome flavour apparently. (I say apparently because i'vent done it yet. Still researching + missing some key components as an ohm meter or multimeter :) )

Edit you don't dryburn cotton, you replace it when it has done it's jobb :)

Pt mini work best with a 2,5 ohm especially for organic liquids. Anyway I use 2mm silica, 0.18 kanthal with 7 wraps and fill it up with a couple of a single strains of silica to fill up the gaps and away you go :)

see, i found the stock 2.5ohm that comes with the head wasnt working for me so i went to a 1.5 which made a big difference. this was also recommended to me by my local shop.

Sure but this will burn your liquid when using 100% vg organic liquid on a standard 3,7 - 4,2 volt battery. :)

I am using a 80/20 mix right now but have some Virgin Vapor coming which i believe is 100%vg

So as i read the chart for my 1.5ohm coil, i guess ive been in the "sweet spot" around 3.8v as i have noticed above 4.0v it has a warmer burn which isnt bad but nicer when its cooler.

I also swapped the wick to cotton last night and added a cotton flavor wick and noticed a burning taste so i removed it and its just fine now.

thanks for that. :toast:

Taste was definitely better than box standard coils with silica wick.

Dry burning with cotton wick is NO NO, as cotton will burn. By dry burning - I mean the coil only. Once you wash or clean your coil, before inserting the wick dry burn the coil, couple of times, no more than 3sec. repeat 4 or 5 times, make sure it glows bright and red. Then insert the wick, saturate it with juice.

I really like cotton, and silica tastes a little off for me now. But I think its a personal taste. The biggest pro for me to originally try cotton was that I could just run down to walmart and get the peaches n cream 100% cotton yarn 360ft for like $3 and didn't have to wait on vape mail again. I know my buddy uses the cotton ball stuff, I hate touching it, but it works well for him. So I would at least try the cotton and you could order some silica or ekowool or whatever. (this is where its good to have local vaping friends to share with)

As for size if you use 1/16 drill bit like I do that works out to 1.58mm. So that really depends on the size coils you are making.

Also just make sure if you do use cotton to make sure the wick is wet before you hit that fire button. Cotton will burn, a taste you won't soon forget. Oh and when you boil some of the yarn cut it into smaller pieces first so you don't end up with a giant knot.

Best of luck.

Instead of boiling, could you run it threw a few cycles of a ultrasonic cleaner????

If you don't want or like the silica, don't like the taste of breaking in of cotton or hemp? I went and unbraided some ekowool into single strands and with a bead threader put several strands into my protank builds. Now I have the dryburn ability of ekowool with the replacement convenience of cotton. With cotton I was lucky to get 3 days before replacing the wicking but with the ekowool I can get several dryburns and over a week before having to replace the ekowool wicking. I didn't torch or boil my ekowool, if you torch it becomes crispy and harder to use.

What were you seeing that you had to replace the cotton wick in 3 days?

Yup.. that's about as far as it got before I noticed it begin to loose performance. With 2 of us vaping in the household it became more of a chore to replace the wicking so often, so I tried the hemp and got twice as long before having to swap out the wicking and now I'm using unbraided ekowool and a bead threader and probably going to use that since its the most resilient, I can dryburn it and get much longer performance out of the wool.

My favored builds:

1.8 ohm coil:
1/16th ID
30 gauge kanthal A-1
8 wrap contact coil
1 strand peaches n creme ekru cotton yarn through the center

The same procedure using 28 awg instead of 30 awg will result in a 1.3 ohm coil.

I used the exact method a couple days ago and got 1.8ohm right on the dot.
