Kanger Protank 2 Issues

Hey,

I'm new to this forum but I've browsed around for months. This place is great and I'm hoping you can help me end the issues I've been experiencing with my Kanger Protank 2.

I use a Vamo that I bought from fasttech with my Kanger Protanks. The juice I use is Zeus E-juice 30PG/70VG. My all day vape is Zeus Juice (awesome flavor, try it if you haven't).

Recently, for the past month my Kanger Protank has been leaking/gurgling and bounces e-liquid into my mouth on a regular basis. Sometimes it leaks onto my Vamo and I can't even pull, and when I do it's usually minimal vapor production. If I'm vaping something menthol, it'll be an intense mint feeling with no vapor and I can hear the liquid boiling (sometimes bouncing into my mouth) and gurgling.

I ended up Googling around and found a thread here where a guy put the rubber condom back onto the coil and it worked, so I did that. The problems stayed away for a few minutes, but eventually returned. I did more searching and found another thread here where a guy advised to put 2 rubber condoms on the coil, one on the bottom towards the wicks, and one on top of it flipped upside down. I did that, and it was a great fix; no more leaking and no more gurgling. The vapor production is wonderful, but the taste is blah. There is a hint of flavor, but not much, and if I chain vape a little then I taste a little bit of a burnt taste. I think the vaper's term is a dry hit.

How can I fix this without bringing back the gurgling and continue to prevent e-liquid from clogging it up and bouncing into my mouth?

The main cause of kanger bcc leaks is usually the flavor wicks. You want the flavor wicks to seal up the gaps between the coil and the shaft, yet it cannot be too tight, or it would restrict juice.

With silica as flavor wicks, there is a tendency for it to be displaced slightly after some time, leading to flooding or gurgling.

With cotton as flavor wicks, it stays in place better and it expands to seal the gaps. Many people have good success with it as flavor wicks. For me, it wicks too well as flavor wicks and leads to flooding, although I do use it as the medium for the coil.

With ekowool as flavor wicks, it stays in place and does not flood for me. However, flavor is not as good as cotton. Bear in mind that you will need to use the correct diameter ekowool for your coil size.

Keep in mind that I'm referring to the flavor wicks, NOT the main wick. That would be a different topic.

In short: There should be no gaps when the main wick and flavor wicks are saturated. Test this by dropping 2 or 3 drops of juice on the head and see if there are gaps.

learn to rebuild kanger coils, and use cotton (cvs sterile cotton balls, $3 a box) for a wick; dump the crappy flavor wicks too...its a WAY better vape.

i have a video in my blog about it, and i talk about some of the tools i piled up to make it easier..

i also had issues with gurgles on my mini protank II, but i discovered that i had my coils TOO low in the head, it has to be low enough so it wont touch the cap and short out, but high enough that the cotton runs straight in and thru the coil, the lower edge of the coil is maybe 1mm or 1.5mm below the notch in the head (the notch is where the wick will stick out).

stock Kanger heads are at best spotty and at worst inconsistent and awful. thats why i learned how to rebuild mine. its a much better vaping experience.

Why would you take the rubber "condom" off in the first place. It's there to keep your tank from flooding. Disassemble it, wash it, dry burn the head, put it back together and leave the kanger parts where they are.
I didn't know it was a part of of the actual coil until I found out later. I am an amateur vaper.

I am using stock coils with the flavor wicks still intact and I'd rather not waste time rebuilding the coils with different wicking. That's not for me :p.

Do you think I should try removing the flavor wicks? Both or just one?

Hopefully the leak will stay fixed, but that is usually only temporary with that solution. Even if you are not into 'rebuilding' the head, at least give re-wicking the stock coil with cotton a go. On an old or spare head if you have one. It (rewicking) is the only truly long lasting fix for flooding issues ime, and it's a better vape to boot.

good luck.

I wouldn't advise modifying anything until you vape it as it was designed for a while. Get use to getting it to work right the way it is, and THEN if you're not satisfied with it start tinkering with it. When I dry burn my head I take out the old flavor wicks and replace them with one piece of 1mm wick. Honestly I can't imagine more vape than what I get from it. You can buy silocn wick at places like PBDragon or probably even on Amazon. I first burn it with a bic lighter to burn off any factory residue that might be on it. I tried taking all the flavor wicks out and it gurgled and spat just like it did for you. I don't know what Kanger uses but their flavor wicks just disintegrate with one tank usage. An actual bit of wick is much stronger and lasts longer. But seriously, before you start worrying about how to modify the tank, use it for a while and find out if it even NEEDS to be modified. A lot of people watch videos or whatnot and they immediately start trying to alter their brand new tank and then they wonder why juice is spitting into their mouth.

I agree with what the others have said about re-wicking with cotton. I use Protank II's almost exclusively, and since I switched to re-wicking with cotton, my problems with gurgling/leaking/flooding have pretty much stopped. And as an added bonus, better flavor and vapor production. If you're worried about the time involved, don't be. With a little practice, you can re-wick in no time. I have about 30 coils. Every few months, I'll sit down and re-wick them all while I watch a movie.

Yes, if you are referring to the little rubber ring above the atomizer head post, this should stay on. I know a vaper who puts a second one on too!! (presumably to avoid screwing the base unit in too far??)

Just to say.

If I get a leaky Protank, I take it apart and remove the flavour wicks then add 2 fresh ones (1mm x 2) or one strand of 2mm.

As far as I am concerned, Kanger never got the correct width of silica in the first place. You can get up 4-5mm of Silica or Cotton wool in these heads. I would build one with 4.5mm or cotton wool. If I use a "stock" head, I tend to ADD more wick (above the coil, not IN the coil), not take away the flavour wicks and leave the single strand in the Kanger coil.

Just some thoughts. Everybody has different tweaks.
