Cotton IMO is superior to silica.
Flavour is increased, and it seems that it atomizes better, getting more nic absorption.
That being said, it's more labour intensive to begin with. Learning how much cotton to use is trial and error, and may frustrate you. I just had a cotton wick last 5 days on some pretty dark liquid, which is really good.. before I was re-wicking after every tank. So I may have found the sweet spot.

I was having all the same problems. Started using cotton for the wicks and that solved it. But now have moved to rda's

This just happened to me. Go figure. Comment "no problem here" and the next day I have a gurgling tank and a mouthful of juice. Not a pleasant experience when all you want is a vape with your coffee in the morning. I'm going to try a new tank, as recommend on ECF.
