Kanger Protank Replacement Heads

I think Kanger is having some problems with quality control? Nothing but burnt tasting rubber and sometimes burnt metal. I took off the cone to look at the coil and its not even at all. I thought my juice wasnt wicking well so I go to take off a piece of flavor wick and...there are only 2 pieces. Removing 1 starts to flood...so I go back to the coil. I readjusted it using a small flat head screwdriver and now it tastes fine. Im guessing the coil wasnt heating up evenly so some parts of the wick was giving me the burnt taste.

I guess Ill just have to recoil all of my atty heads from now on since Kanger cant make good ones.

Edit: I went through 5 atty heads from different stores in my area. It wasnt just the 1 that taste burnt. Most of the coils are wrapped like s***.

The new 10yr old they hired isn't fully trained in the art of coil making yet.
Seriously that is going to suck if it's the case. I have had good luck with my EVOD heads so far.

In your opinion, do you believe the coils are wrapped to tight?

I got some CE6 heads and the coils seemed to be choking the bejesus out of the wicking material (too tight = poor wicking = lousy taste)..after I tugged and twisted the wicks got it to loosen up...I'm thinking this might be a "pattern" on these "taste like crap" posts

I wonder if a "flavor wick" just laid across the coils would help kick up the flavor

Might depend on where they got them. A few people have complained about non Kanger coils from FT being crap. The real ones I have got so far have winding- gap - small tight winding in center - gap - winding type of construction. Very precisely spaced.

I ended up re-doing a couple coils. Mostly just to change cotton and clean off the coil. I would almost rather buy replacement coils than spending 30 mins on it. The 2.2 ohms seem like they last a little longer in my setup. 1.8 gets dirty fast i noticed.

Don't know whats going on. I really like my protank 2.

I rebuilt my protank 2 last night. It was very easy. I used organic cotton balls and 32 g kenthal. What a difference!! This thing hits like a dream now and the flavor is amazing!! Only took me about 10 minutes. I'll rebuild all my coils from now on. Not bad for my first rebuild. No leaking or any other issues. Try it, you won't regret it.

Yeah, rebuild your coils, it's the best way to go, learn a new skill and gain control over your own hardware instead of being dependent upon someone else somewhere else. It's a lot cheaper than buying new coils too, and you can get into micro-coils and different wicking materials. It's just a better way to go.

That's what I noticed too. He must have some knock-offs because all the genuine Kanger heads are wrapped perfectly with that gap. Do you suppose they do that to up the resistance? The ones I've looked at have 3 wraps-gap-3 wraps. I can't get a 2.5Ω without 7 wraps.

Not uncommon and not just Kanger.
I find myself tweaking coils often. That is why it pays to know how to get at the coil and to NOT buy ce4's.

Adjusting a Kanger coil is almost as easy as cleaning one............which most of us forget to do when installing new.

Put a new head in today on my Mini Protank...leak city! Opened it up, no flavor wick. Added one, and it's hitting like a dream, no more leaking.

Best thing to do, with all these quality control issues, is check first before you fire it up

i replace brand new coils out of atomizers before i ever use them. i never use stock replacment heads. then again i don't buy new ones. i have plenty to rotate.

Great observation. This isn't anything new. I've been fiddling with my factory coils for some time now, although I very rarely buy coils anymore, as I have 35+ coils that I just rebuild now.

You have to think, not just is quality control very weak over there in China often times, but also shipping long distances can make defects in something so fragile as coils. The 30/32g kanthal wire is just so thin.


You'll find most people prefer their rebuilt coils over the factory ones. Not just is it cheaper than buying new ones by about 1/10 of the price, but it is VERY easy to do FAR SUPERIOR coils

I just rebuild mine with 3 1.5mm wicks and some flat wire, 3/4 wraps.around 1.2 ohms.its pretty damn good

I noticed on my replacement heads that the wick is a different type than before. I know silica wicks are like fiberglass, but the wicks in mine were literally looking like tiny strands of fiberglass sticking out. The coil looks like a new type too, the metal has a blueish hue to it, and It has been burning out my cotton wick within a few hours.
