ok got a cobra last week or maybe two. and wanted to try a different mesh size wick - the original coil i was using was made from some K- 32g i had from doing the A7 and some other stuff.
realized I didnt have anymore of that so i grabbed what came with the cobra, this is kanthal-d wire 32g./0.20 dia

First: I am in no way a coil master yet, but slowly im getting it and they have been working good and getting better every wrap.

the first coil I made from the original wire in the cobra worked, not perfect, but good enough for the vapor to make my head spin. at about 1.7 ohms
Since using this K-D wire I cannot seem to get a stable coil or past 1.1 ohms and as soon as it gets hot it drops and errors me out of my pv. plus I cant stop the topcoil from glowing something fierce.

Is it this wire? should i just skip it and order some more of the other stuff? just to add i did it about 8 different ways/times (youtubevids) so far with the exact same results. 4 wraps to 7 wraps nothing is different.

any help as always is appreciated.

I'm in no way a "coil master", but I bet I've wrapped at least 200. I have used every wire from 28 up to 36 and sometimes I have done battle with coils. Since I started using this method 25 or 30 setups ago I have had to make maybe 5 or 10 minor tweaks. It is truly foolproof. No offense intended. The entire coil will glow evenly every time.

do you know which size drill bit fits the DuD?

maybe i could go to lowes with my DuD and fiddle around with stuff. but something is telling me that drill bits come sealed in a package without me being able to size them up. maybe i should just stop being cheap and buy an entire set of drill bits. i dont even have a drill lol. oh, the places vaping will take you..:)

shot in the dark: does anyone know of an item that its the same diameter of a drill bit? ive tried a chopped up wire coathanger but its too skinny. i added masking tape to it to increase the diameter, but the tape is too squishy when wrapping- makes it impossible to slide the coil off.

I gave my duds to friends, but if you post in the "dud setups" thread I'm sure someone will tell you. Again, I'm not sure of the name of the thread, but I know it exists I have seen it a few times. Sorry I couldnt be more help. At least your on the right track. :)

well golly, its not perfect but working again, all this abuse i will have to make a new wick tomorrow, but that trick works pretty good, thanks man!.

i still think somethings up w the wire as well though, as the D is listed much cheaper for same length at vendors. so may be usable but not as good .

Like everything else, building a good coil in an RBA takes practice, and this is ESPECIALLY true with a genesis style atomizer. Keep it up though, to date the Cobra is by far my favorite genesis i've ever owned, and I found it very easy to wrap coils with no hotspot troubles at all on it. This opinion may change in a few days though when my BliSS comes in! :D

inform us how you like it i want one but not sure yet. (you sir are full of the suckage)
yea i love the cobra, the draw is exactly how i wanted it and to me is perfect.. the bliss is supposed to be i tiny bit looser.

I played with this wire and redid a coil in the A7 - it burst into flames. the first coil in the cobra ran fine, not perfect but fine. the A7 hasn't had a bad one yet until now. so i dont know whats up and skipping it till I have more of some other wire to compare. like i said there is some kind of difference because the D is almost $2 cheaper for same lot size. so they must think so too.

Add: after even further playing it may not be actually be bad so to speek, but does seem to get hot very very fast - im used to a little delay, this stuff is glowing red in milliseconds, even at 3V with a 2ohm coil it seems to get very hot. and makes the sides of the A7 hotter then i think is normal.

a few months ago i needed more 28g wire, couldnt find any at the time. what i did find was some kanthal 29-d. i only had purchased a small amount. after running out of that i was able to find some 28-a, so from experience i can tell you that to me there was no noticable difference in the wire, except for the resistances. but as far as the a compared to the d, i could not tell the difference. the ease of wrapping, and the outcome of the coils were the same. also no difference in hotspots etc.

The reason tha D wire is cheaper than A-1 is in its physical properties. Reading through a Kanthal brouchure it states that Kanthal A-1 is better at high temperature when used in funaces to avoid coil 'creep', which means that coils will tend to bunch together in spots after long periods of use. I don't think we have this issue in our small scale set-ups, but who knows. The two are basically the same metal alloy - perhaps slightly different blend percentages.

looking on the web i have found the D is a different blend, cant find the info right now, but something about a major decrease in the aluminum content and much more chromium, i picked up some 30 guage and the difference in stiffness is very noticeable, the D i have is like a silica wick or solder compared to the wire I just got (not actually that soft but just saying how extreme) and getting better results right away.

im still trying to figure out why at 2ohms and 3 volts it made the A7 untouchably hot.

maybe some is better then others but what i have is very soft and think it isnt well suited for this particular task,
it gets too hot way too fast..

oh well no biggie -as with all this stuff.... playing is learning to me.
