I rebuild my Kanger coils with kanthal and cotton. Obviously, I change out the cotton and re-wick, but my question is, how do I know when it's time to put in a new coil?

When you push the fire button and nothing happens.

I had a coil last me 5 months (about 450 mls) and it was still going. It had become deformed but it still worked.

I personally change it whenever it starts to look out of shape... Meaning when I have re-wicked it and dry burned it several times and the coil doesn't look straight and the wraps/loops looks not so round. I honestly think kanthal is inexpensive and you can re-coil as often as you like or whenever you feel it's necessary. I tend to rebuild like 6 coils at a time and just change it every week or so until I reach the last on and then re-coil them all again just to keep a fresh head in it at all times.

I use Sickly Sweet, High VG e-Liquids.

So you me, the Question of when to Change to a New Coils is pretty straight forward. When a Coil/Wick starts to get "Gunked Up" it starts to give me Dry Hits. And the Hit starts to taste like Burnt Marshmallows.

I clean and dry burn the coil before I re-wick. I'd rather not have to make new coils often, if I don't have to. Which is why the cotton works well for me - pull old cotton out, clean coil, put new cotton in. Some of my coils have been working for months - I just wanted to make sure that there was nothing wrong with using a coil for that long, assuming it's still working.

I've had this happen as well, but if I discard my cotton, then fire the coils a bit until they start to glow, the "gunk" will just chip right off with a pick or sharp tweezers. You can clear it 100% and continue to use the coil if you wish.

Yeah... That Technique of Heating the Coil without a Wick, or with a Dry Silica Wick, is what is referred to as "Dry Burning". And it is a Tried an True Technique most of the Time.

What I have found Greatly Extends the time between needing to Dry Burn or Replace a Coil is to Flush the Wick/Coil out with Hot Tap Water at every Refill. Or close to it.

No need to Dry the Wick. Just Shake/Blow off as Much Water as possible. And then Refill.

The First couple of hits will be kinda Weak. Due to the Water on the Wick. But after that, you should be Back in Business.

I always make a new coil once my juice starts tasting stale even if I've just rewicked and it still tasting stale. Or, I will make a new coil once my device isn't hitting as hard as it did on a new coil. Many of times the resistance of the coil hasn't even changed but it's still not giving me the power or the flavor I was getting on a new coil. So I just pull the coil off and build a new one about once a week...I waste a lot of kanthal :vapor:

If your using 32 gauge kanthal then the likelihood of it beginning to loose its umph after a couple rewickings. I found it distorted and bent super easy when excavating the crusties off the coil after a couple dryburns and rewickings. I now use 30 gauge, its a bit thicker so stands up better in the long run thus getting more rewickings before it poops out. With the airflow adapter you can easily vape .8+ ohm builds with your kanger and lower ohm coils can be achieved more easily with the 30 gauge rather than the 32. I find 28 is a bit too thick for protank heads and have had them short out for no reason.
