is this the type of wire i'd want for rebuilding the vivi nova tank atty heads?
also, what is the difference between the different grades? im seeing all types of gauges from 28aw to 46aw. do the different gauges offer different resistances....or are the number of coil wraps what you use to get different resistances....or neither perhaps?

higher the number gauge = thinner wire
thinner wire = higher resistance per inch (1 inch of 38gauge wire would have more resistance than 32gauge)
number of coils depends on what length of wire you need to achieve a particular resistance.

It all seems kinda backwards but hopefully that makes sense.

This thread has some good info in it:

There are some other very good threads about it, just can't remember em all right now...

kinda depends on yer battery voltage, everybody has their "sweet spot".

3.7v maybe start at the 1.8 - 2.2 ohm range, 6v prolly 3ohm or higer.

If you have a vv device it makes it a bit easier to experiment with and adjust voltage if you made yer coil a lil too high/low resistance.

Be careful tho, if you run your coil too hot the it will affect wicking a bit. It is another area that you will need to find a happy medium for wicking for you spcific vape style and coil.

Thats where different gauge wires comes into play. if you want to get higher Ω you must use thinner wire. I keep kanthal 32 for around 2Ω in any RBA. Then I have Nichrome 34 and 36 for higher Ω. You only have so much space in a vivi so I would say get it down first w the 32 then if you feel froggy play around w thinner wire. Also in case you are not aware, burn the Kanthal w a lighter first, it makes the wire much more pliable and less springy, way easier to wrap w/o it wanting to spring back to its natural shape.

The letters after the number are usually awg. It's the American Wire Gauge (AWG), also known as the Brown & Sharpe wire gauge, a standardized wire gauge system. And when buying Kanthal wire make sure you are buying A-1. This is the highest quality wire, and I persoanlly don't think anyone wants to use a substandard wire just to save a couple bucks.

So if you have 32awg wire you have wire that is 0.008 of an inch in diameter. If you have 36awg wire the wire would be 0.005 of an inch in diameter. The 36awg will give you a higher resistance than 32awg because there is less of a path for the electricity to flow. The bigger the path the lower the resistance in essence.

Just thought I would add my :2c: I love electricity!!! Especially when it comes to vaping or motorcycles.

i apologize. i was unclear. i do indeed know what voltage resistance combo i prefer. my question was more qalong the lines of if its is even possible to control what ohms/resistance my atty head turns out to be. i see now that its the gauge of the wire that determines this. totally makes sense. well, backwards sense if you will (if that makes sense lol).

i really appreciate the advice.
and yes i had heard of the burning of the wire. i thought it was to remove machine oil and impurities, but im pleased to hear that it will help with wrapping the coil as well :)

Mike,
Those aren't the letters I was referring to. Isn't there different grades of say 32 AWG, like L or something like that?

Yes it is very possible to control what you end up with. I have found that 2.5" of 32 Kan gives me like a 2.5Ω coil. There is a freshly posted chart somewhere here that shows most of the different wire resistances per inch, which is a great way to aim and hit your target. I sometimes use my meter to determine how much resistance the piece I cut will give just by using the leads to the pre cut piece.

wow, what a great idea :) what a useful tool this multimeter turned out to be
but i like what youve got going on. seeing how 32 will fit nicely in the vivi heads, i think ill go with that. plus i can totally get behind a 2.5ohm coil. i might try to go a tad higher, but id be happy with 2.5.

There are different grade of Kanthal. Usually it will say something like Kanthal A-1 32awg. That is the highest quality wire they make. Then there is Kanthal D 32awg, which I haven't used because I think I should use the best quality wire to vaporize something that is going into my lungs. Other than that I haven't seen the letters you are referring too. Can you post a link to a specific wire, and maybe we can figure out what those letters mean more thoroughly?
