I too am having trouble with my rba Penelope. I only currently have 32 A Kanthal and some Non-resistance wire that is required to make the Penelope work.

How can I test the Kanthal Ohms with a multimeter? Do I test (with a multimeter) only the coil, and not the extra part of the kanthal I used to wrap the no resistance wire? Or should I test the whole part of the kanthal wire including part that has least resistance?...That part being where I wrapped the non-resistance wire on both ends.

Having A VV mod really does help me out so I can figure out what works for a newly made coil without my multimeter. But I seem to have trouble making LR coils. I always end up at 4.0V or higher.

I would really like to make LR coils because with that I could get good vapor and TH without using a lot of battery power.

Attach the non-resistance wire to one end, then measure the resistance by keeping one end of the multimeter on the NR wire, and moving the other end of the multimeter up and down the resistance wire until you get the ohm reading you want. Put a bend in the resistance wire at that spot. That's where you want to attach the other non resistance wire. Hopefully that makes sense. There are a few youtube videos that explain it, if that was unclear.

i am not a *ton* of help, but from what ive gathered, using higher resistance coils and higher voltage actually stresses your battery less than using lower volts and LR. seems strange, i know. and im no rocket sergeon so i just take "their" word for it.

Hey all,
Here's the chart I was referring to:

As per TomCatt's chart:

Resistance in Ohms/inch for the Resistance Wires

Kanthal Grade----- A-1 ------ A -------- D ----- Nichrome 60 -------- Nichrome 80

30 awg (Ω/in)----- 0.7 ------ 0.7 ------ 0.7 -------- 0.6 -------- -------- 0.5
31 awg (Ω/in)----- 0.9 ------ 0.9 ------ 0.8
32 awg (Ω/in)----- 1.2 ------ 1.1 ------ 1.1 -------- 0.9 -------- -------- 0.9
33 awg (Ω/in)----- 1.4 ------ 1.4 ------ 1.3
34 awg (Ω/in)----- 1.8 ------ 1.8 ------ 1.7 -------- 1.4 -------- -------- 1.4
35 awg (Ω/in)----- 2.3 ------ 2.2 ------ 2.1
36 awg (Ω/in)----- 2.9 ------ 2.8 ------ 2.7 -------- 2.3 -------- -------- 2.1

With 30g at .7 ohms per inch you need almost 3 inches for a 2 ohm coil, kind of hard to get that in tight spaces.

I'm not an electrical genius myself either. Bookmark any Ohm's Law calculator and start plugging numbers in.
Batteries have a mah rating -milliamp hours . The fewer amps you draw from the battery - the longer the charge lasts.
Example:------------------------------- Compared to:
5 volts with----------------------------- 3.7 volts with
3 ohm coil draws ----------------------1.64 ohm coils draws
1.67 amps for a total of-------------- 2.25 amps for a total of
8.33 watts ------------------------------8.33 watts

Both should produce the same vape experience .The higher voltage setup uses ~25% less battery power.

Hope that makes sense .

What type of local store would carry this wire. I would like to get some locally if I could, rather than order on line and wait. Thanks.

None that anybody knows of in my 4 months of using it. Is it out everywhere on Ebay? The go to guy is Silicawicks.com
I'll overnight you some if you want to pay for the shipping.

Gimmie, I just goofed the other day as I made a 1.6ohm coil then w/o thinking, put it on a 2amp limit device and wondered why I wasn't getting the vape I wanted.
Once I realized it, I put it on a 2.5amp device and it was a lot better, but still not what I wanted.
I made a hybrid coil (ss mesh/cotton core) and since the mesh acts like a heat sink of sorts, I put it on a 3amp device and it was rockin'.
Just something to keep in mind when making different coils.

Good job grasshopper. :D Let me point you to the "wicks safe and dangerous" thread. You will find some things you will find amazing

You have a link kwalka?
If your are referring to the cotton core, no worries there.
As soon as the flavor becomes anemic I add more juice. I have opened/inspected the coil and when it gets to this point, the mesh/cotton are still soaking wet but the well is dry. So I'm not concerned about burning cotton or the S.S. fumes as it doesn't get that hot.

would the 3 or 3.5mm silica wicks be better for the vivi nova?
