I cover the air holes while top filling my rockets as well.

Rocket V1 I removed the air screw for more flow. Also, to prevent any weeping from the fill screw on the bottom, remove it and put some cotton in, and then screw it back in.

Rocket V2 I just close the air flow ring and fill from the top.

I don't even use the air screw in my rockets it's not needed and tightens the draw even backed out. If it leaks after fill just wipe it as it will flood and leak a tiny bit but then it goes away. The true Kayfun and Russian style are easier to top fill and don't leak due to the way the chimney forms a seal even before fully tightened.

I do it like steve. when you fill it up 3 times a day that little bitty screw strips can easily get lost or stripped out.

I have a KFL+ Clone. I fill it from the top while covering the airhole with my thumb. I screw the top almost all the way down and during the last turn I turn it upside down while releasing my thumb. Probably sounds more complicated than it is. Good luck!
