Horizontal coil should be no problem.
The cotton needs to be loose enough to slide through with a slight tug, but not so tight as to where it chokes. However, that seems to not be your issue.
Someone had mentioned lubricating your o-rings with juice before you reassemble the atomizer. This is a very important step.
I use unflavored VG specifically for that purpose. You want all of the o-rings to expand to their maximum natural extent in order to properly form the vacuum seal. That 4c o-ring is a pain, but if I were you I would start fresh, and use a process of elimination.
Completely clean out the atomizer in warm water and dry completely. Make sure your coil is right over that air hole, only elevated enough to lift the coil legs off the deck, and make sure the cotton is reaching down to the "juice deck", and just touching that upper juice-channel groove. Screw the entire chimney assembly on as tight as can. Lubricate the o-rings, even on the chimney assembly, before you reassemble it, and most importantly try filling it from the bottom through the fill hole. Once you know that the vacuum sealed, and everything is good, you can narrow down why you're having this leakage.
It's not uncommon to have a bit extra juice flow into the chamber once you first assemble. After about five or ten extended draws the problem should dry up.
There is a process for top-filling KFs, and it involves holding your finger over the air flow and letting that air bubble escape as you turn the atomizer over. But that's a separate issue.
Good luck
