I'm totally new to this so I just need a little help in maybe pointing me in the right direction. I've watched a million youtube videos and they are very helpful for specific things but here are some of my questions. I have a new kayfun lite plus (second batch whatever that means). My first wicks I have tried are with 28g kanthal and 2mm ekowool. I did about 5 wraps and it came out to be 1ohm. What I'm questioning is on this specific wrap, how do I get it to come out to be more like 1.4 or 1.5ohm? Would that be achieved by increasing the kanthal to 30g? Or would I do the 28g and just do more wraps? This is probably a very elementary question but I honestly don't know. The next coil I'm going to attempt will be a microcoil with cotton but I feel like knowing how to increase the ohm would probably be beneficial across the board. Anyone else have a coil they are super happy with? What I'm trying to achieve really is bringing out the taste in my liquids. Throat hit is somewhat important but I'm already getting that in the kayfun so really just taste and vapor. I'm coming from protanks so it's already an improvement but was told that if I stay in the 1ohm range I risk burning up my insulator. I don't feel like I'm getting huge clouds either with the 1ohm. Also, with the ekowool how often does that need to be changed out? Basically wondering how long a coil might be good for? I was reading that some people change cotton on a microcoil every day. Is that typical? Thanks in advance.

Here are some calculators that you can do some what if kind of calcs. to see the effect of different wire gauge, wire length, etc. Basically, as mentioned in a prior post, increasing the length of the wire will increase Ω ad well as decreasing the gauge. With these tools you can see it and for me it helps it sink in better...... hope this helps....

The more wraps in your coil, the higher the resistance will be. The higher the gauge number, the higher the resistance. If 5 wraps of 28g equals 1 ohm, then 5 wraps of 30g will be more than 1 ohm, maybe 1.4 to 1.6. I am not really sure what it would turn out to be, I don't use ecowool or silica. I am a micro coil and cotton kind of guy.

8 wraps of 30ga on a 1/16" mandrel micro coil = 1.8 ohm. Works great in the KFL+ wicked with organic cotton.
I
I agree with coalyard. However I have had more luck with wicking when I use 5/64 mandrel size. But this was with coils around 1 ohm on a mechanical where voltage can't be adjusted. If you get dry hits with 1/16 try 5/64 the next time.

I've melted my insulator just a tad, when i first got my kayfun, i was never told not to dry fire too long or let it get too hot. At the time i had a 1 ohm silica build. Since it was silica, before i filled it up with another juice, i disassembled it down to just having the lower half of the chimney, i fired it down until the silica got white, and i ended up having misfires. why? because my insulator melted and the screw at the 510 connection got loose. tightened it up and worked as it would.

Just be careful about dry firing if you build with silica, disassemble everything so it can't breathe. you'll be fine =)
As for my favorite, i tend to stick in the 1.3 ohm to 1.5 ohm range.

speaking of insulators, I tried for the heck of it a sub ohm dual coil in my KFL+ (with larger drilled airholes), and not only did it take a long time to build and position (two .8ohm coils total resistance .4 running on my mech), but there simply wasnt enough airflow with the device to support a low subohm dual coil build. And it would run so hot a 4-5 second draw would actually make the outside of the KFL+ HOT. not warm. After using this for a few hours, I checked and did some damage to the insulator from excess heat.

As for kayfun style devices, its subohm single coils for me from now on.
