Be sure that you're not using too much cotton. Your wick should pull in with very little resistance and not flare out much where it exits the coil. For good wicking, my preferred method on my kayfun clone is to just have the wicks come down to the channels, but doing it like the instructions should work as well.

If you put your finger over the air hole and give a sharp pull you should see an air bubble go up and that should saturate your wick. If you can get a good vape by vaping three or four puffs, giving a sharp dry pull, then vaping again, then it sounds like you do have wicking problems.

qorax posted some builds she's done. You might get some ideas from the pictures as to wick length.
