You'll love fiber optic, I couldn't work from home otherwise bc I have to upload huge files daily.

I recently switched to the new "gigabit" for the same cost (around 75/mo) Idk if it's true gigabit but my uploads regularly hit ~500mbps while my gf and roommate are both watching streaming media in separate rooms.

So I finally decided on the box for my dad, was looking at the Chinese ones and whatnot but I ended up just getting him the new fire TV box bc it's only like $20 more.

I'm just gonna set it up for him then wait till the 18th so I can use it as a father's day gift.

Anybody else using the fire TV with kodi? We had 2 of them before but they were the old version and it looks like they improved the specs considerably, esp. on the gpu.

Good thing... because some of the sites say that if you have an apple TV or Fire stick, it's time to invest in a REAL box. Apple and firestick just cannot handle the upgrades anymore.

Those sites wouldn't be sellin' boxes, would dey?

My Fire TV Sticks are doin' fine wid Kodi 17.3 mitt add-ons. I just try to load what I need, not everything.

I might get a better box wid plug-in memory capability, since da FTVSs don't have it.

The firestick is what they have now though and want replaced, this is for their bedroom I already got them a shield box for the living room. at least I can say the fire stick is better than the Apple TV though, everyone I know who has one agree it's a waste of money.

Yesterday I was on the phone with my dad and had to secretly convince him not to buy another box bc I already ordered him one for fathers day, my uncle reccommended him the Apple TV even though he was just complaining it sucked a week ago. Apple people are weird.

no - at the kodi site that says that you need to upgrade to 17.2,,,, no 17.3 :)

Welp. I'm done doin' it.
I checked the applicable copyright laws, and ya know what? Here in the U.S. you can make a personal use copy of your media without it being illegal.

Been looking at these copyright laws, and they are different for different countries with England being the worst. Over there, it was illegal no matter what until a couple of years ago. About DVD Copyright Laws - Digital Copyright Laws in US, UK, Japan, Australia, Norway....

So, I've taken my 1500 pieces of music and put them on an external hard drive and am copying my DVDs as well.
I was doing some investigating on getting a "DVD library" like you see on those home shows, and it turns out that they don't have some sort of robot to load your favorite movies. They have them copied to a drive and use a library program to then access them.

I've purchased Wonderfox and have been enjoying it. WonderFox DVD Converter - Convert DVD and Video Faster than Ever
I got the lifetime upgrade plan for the $10 extra, and am thinking it would be worth it.

I tried some of the ones from A List of the Best DVD Ripper Software Tools
but while they SAY they are free, some of them are only free if you rip just 5 min at a time.

Do any of you Rip your DVDs for personal use, and if so... what do you use?

I've ripped all my DVDs and put them on several external solid state drives. The drives are connected to my steam machine/htpc which stays on & I use as a plex server... All the other TV's have shield boxes and with plex or plexbmc you can watch all those movies from anywhere in the house. I just use kodi/emby so they just show up in kodi... I think this is the simplest way to do it but ymmv.

I mostly used a program called handbrake. & you're right pretty much if you own it you can copy it for personal use. I kept all the DVDs but they are stored in some crates on my basement so I don't have to look at them.

I sideloaded Kodi on a firestick. It worked. I just dont think the performance is nearly as good as a Chinese $60 andoroid tv box. Plus, the firestick's "Amazon in your face" interface annoys me.

I use Handbrake to rip, and Plex to serve.

I couldn't tell if handbrake would work with "foreign" DVDs, and I have several from Denmark that I like to watch. the one I purchased states outright that it will work with them, so that is why I got it :)
You may have to decrypt the DRM separately, but yeah.

I didn't get the stick, they already have that one but don't like the performance of it, I looked at it and can confirm that as well, esp in like action movies and whatnot... I got the fire TV box going by specs as far as I can tell it's the next best thing to the shield.

Plus she already uses the stick for shopping & Alexa thing so I figured familiar is good.
