Hey guys, I recently stopped using chewing tobacco using my vape and I have to say so far I love it. So 3 weeks ago I bought myself the Smok mag kit with the TFV12 prince tank and I guess the biggest issue I’ve had with vaping so far is that I haven’t had a coil last me more than 3 days. I read a few articles and watched a few videos about how to make my coils last longer but nothing is working. I’ve been priming them, trying not to dry hit it, I’ve been cutting down on chain-vaping, and I’ve tried 3 different versions of the prince coils so far. I’ve been mainly using dinner lady orange tart and Naked 100’s unicorn e liquids, and I know both are sweet and that can be a problem but I would imagine that even with that being the case I should get more than 600 puffs without the coil tasting like crap. I’m just kind of looking for some advice and maybe some tips to help make these coils last a little longer because so far I’ve had no luck. Thanks for reading guys and I would appreciate any advice you have.

How many milliliters are you going through before the coil goes bad? With sweet juices that is sometimes a better barometer than number of puffs. Also, how much are you chain vaping (back to back vaping without letting the tank cool down etc.) Chain vaping will cause temps to rise in a tank, sometimes to quite high amounts, especially at high wattage? Length of your pull/vape? Airflow settings? How much VG/PG are you using, high VG can also cause gunking and kill off a coil quite quickly.

All these things can affect coil life, not just how you prime it. It's kind of common early on to vape a lot, so I am imagining that there may be times you are vaping quite heavily, and you may need to do that in order to stop your cravings.

Things that may help: Less sweet juice, if you can find one that appeals to you. A little more PG in your vape, possibly. Trying to stay near the lower end of recommended settings. If possible, getting another mod/tank (maybe try something different) if you are serious about quitting and staying quit (a backup vape is a good thing to have in that circumstance). Uwell Crown tanks can be fairly sub0hm and tend to have a good reputation for coil life, from what I have read.

I am a MTL vaper. The issues about coil life really are across the board. I get safer temps even in my non- temperature controlled tanks by rotating equipment, using different setups, and even combining all my setups my coils last longer because they get times of rest.

Your other option is to consider a rebuildable tank atomizer. They can be a bit of a learning curve for a new vaper, but if you like high wattage and sweet juices, they can be very cost effective as you make your own coils. If that interests you, you may want to take a look at the rebuildable atomizer's forum to get you going in that direction..

Welcome to ECF, congrats on trying to end your tobacco habit. I hope some of this info is helpful but I'm sure others will be along with suggestions as well.

Best of luck,

Anna

Why couldn't it be something other than SMOK?

I wish I could help you more. Fact is, what you are experiencing could be anything from bad coils out of the box to using the wrong type of inhaling technique. You said you've done a fair amount of research. You seem to know how to prime coils correctly.

Replacement coil heads are made by hand by the thousands by Chinese factory workers working up to 12 hours a day. It shouldn't be too surprising that a portion of those might be duds. It wouldn't be unheard of an entire batch of coils to be duds.

Maybe that tank isn't for your style of vaping. But before looking for a different tank, try doing some "primer puffs" between every few vapes. Draw on the tank like you were going to vape, but don't press the fire button. The idea being the suction will draw more e-liquid into the coil heads to avoid dry burnt coils.

Take gentler, longer draws when you vape. This give the e-liquid a better chance to get into the coils.

A second setup might allow the "tank" a chance to recover from chain vaping. We all need a second backup setup, anyway.

This is why I don't use SMOK tanks/coils. I have the exact same problem and so do others, while many others can get a week to a month out of their coils. The owner of a local shop, loves the SMOK coils but he only gets 3-5 days out of them but attributes it to how much he vapes.

I vape a lot so that maybe why I don't get a long life out of them but I can get 2 weeks or more out of Aspire coils in my Atlantis V2, so who knows. Coils get expensive quickly using 2 or more a week, I'd suggest getting a different brand tank or going into an RDA or RTA.

My kit and tank were bought for me as a gift so I couldn't really complain much but I would like to get more life out these coils. I do try and remember to dry hit it at least two good times before I start vaping and I even close off the air flow and do a couple pulls every time I refill the tank. As far as e liquid goes I really want to find an all day vape that won't gunk up my coils, but so far I really like dessert flavors. If there are any good recommendations when it comes to liquids I'm up to try anything though. Bonskibon the liquid I have is Orange Tart I have had the Lemon I just like the orange more. ( I have picture proof that it does exist lol)

Oh my, I wasn't aware there was an orange tart. Going to have to pick some up. :)

Sweetness alone isn't the coil killer, it's the sweetener they use, there's multiple of those and I don't know many manufactures putting it on the label. Dinner lady isn't that bad, there's definitely worse. Judging by my use in a dripper I'd say about 30-40ml should be fine before having to clean the coil. Depending on the amount you vape that could be 3 days or for some even only 1 day. A really nasty juice can gunk up your coil with only 10ml.
There's sweet juices that are easier on your coils, I have a greek yoghurt banana and honey flavor that lasts through 100+ml (diy liquid).

Apparently different coil heads can also influence how quickly you have to change them, I heard that for the SMOK tanks the "1-hole" version does better in that regard (think it's a dual vertical coil).

One thing you did not mention is the wattage you started out at and moved up to with each coil. While some have a need to push the top end, that seems to shorten the life. I am fine running all the Prince coils a bit below the bottom end of their "best at" range and don't notice a considerable drop off in flavor or clouds.

Hi ChrisG13, advice number one: forget about this Dinner Lady Orange Tart to keep your coilheads running the expected time :(

I bought 60ml of it and I can't keep a coil/wick clean for a day ! (in a dripper though)

To compare, with the same setup (dual 24AWG SS @.17 at 50W) I keep my wicks and coils clean for 7 days+ with rayon using DIY liquids, and with Naked 100's Amazing Mango for 3-4 days without rewicking/dry burning (dripping/squonking 6-8ml per day).
I have not seen before a liquid gunkin' coils sooo fast, flavor is great but not for long...
Try to find another liquid of your taste, clearer and thinner (more PG in the ratio), and keep on vaping! Welcome to ECF!
