Labelling for batteries

I understand that it is wise to mark your batteries (18650 and 18350) in some way with the date purchased and with numbers so that they can be identified and charged in rotation. How best to mark them? If with writing on the battery itself, then with what kind of pen, and if with tape, with what kind of tape? Thanks to anyone who knows.

I just use a sharpie. 0413A would be April 2013 and the letter is just to distinguish them as I buy them in bulk usually.
