So we were driving home in a used car my parents just bought (our car is in the shop) and got pulled over. The cop saw my husband vaping and swung in right behind us. I took his Ego and slipped it in my purse because I didn't want to explain it or lose it. So the cop sticks his head in and sniffs, doesn't smell anything weird, and asks us for our papers. OMG my dad had his insurance papers with him and our insurance card wasn't for that car!!!!! They took us out of the car, patted us down, asked about weapons for pete's sake and IMPOUNDED THE CAR!!!!!!

Here is the worst part. $150 to the Police for "administraion costs" $350 to the towing/impound place and a $342 citation for driving unisured that we now have to appear in court on. We were insured!!!!!!!!!! I have spent all day running around getting copies of insurance and notarizing bill of sale to release the car. I will never ever vape while driving again. Or drive in a car without the proof of insurance on me! Crap!!!!!!!

I have been pulled over a few times when I forgot my purse of couldn't find my insurance card and never been treated that way. I thought they were going to arrest us! It was insane!

I totally agree with not driving without proof of insurance, but can't get behind "don't vape and drive". My opinion only, but it seems it might have been less trouble (and looked less suspicious) if you'd just taken the time to enlighten the officer. He obviously saw your husband vaping to begin with.

Anyway, hate that you had to go through all that though.

Um.........my husband is Hispanic. His mom immigrated here when she was 18. They are good people. My husband has done amazing things and helped more people then anyone I know but he still gets treated like a bad person very often because of his race. I don't agree with immigration reform. I think it's terrible how immigrants are treated. If we had to flee the US due to some cause I would hope Canada and Mexico would be humane to us. It is terrible how they are exploited. If businesses didn't hire under the table, the problems wouldn't exist.

But did they ask about what you were smoking? Did they search you or anything?

I have to admit being pulled over makes me want to lose my body functions , but I am anxious like that. I would shake for no reason and be accused of being guilty for nothing.

No they didn't but they did pat us down.

Thanks. I know I should have just explained it but I was terrified. Now I will carry literature and biz cards to help me.

It's the way that things are done now. No proof of insurance and the car gets taken. Wasnt cause your huband was hispanic, what did that have to do with anything? They searched you but didnt search your purse?

Sounds scary I wouldnt have wanted to go threw that, never drive a car that you can't prove insurance on. I like the law cause I'm sick of people with no insurance, I've been hit before and it totally sucked having to come out of pocket for repairs for damage someone else caused.

Hope you get it all worked out.

You didn't say why you were stopped, but in Wisconsin you must have your proof of current insurance coverage....you were in a bad spot with no matching ID also, even if the registration was in the car.
On a good day you'd find a cop who would help you out before impounding, but most of the time it isn't something you could make a phone call over. People are tired of paying for uninsured motorists. These laws eventually make it cheaper for everyone, except that as cars get more expensive, so does the insurance.
Hard to believe you'd get pulled over for vaping. If you worry about that, use a mini e-cig in the car. A white one!

I can imagine how you felt! I have info about my 510 in my glovebox, just in case. Sorry for everthing you have to do to take care of it all, hope you get it all straightened out.

Thanks Monkey. In the end it will be. We are insured up to our eyeballs and so is my Dad. We just didn't think to check before we left and it is our bad. However I know the judge will see what happened and it will be dismissed. The car being impounded........well it's just money after all and money can be earned again. Lesson learned!

He said our plate was dirty and he couldn't read the numbers. It wasn't.

Well I ate and napped and my chin is back up. Whew.

WTF?? That sounds mighty trumped up to me. I'm all in favor of laws to keep us all safe and costs down but if he suspected something (like the PV was a crack pipe), he should have stated that right away.

Sorry you went through that.

Here is Oregon they can pat you down but they can't search your property without a warrant. I would have let them and tried to explain what the PV was but I just panicked. thank you for your well wishes. It will be fine:)

I am Hispanic and of course my son, when he gets a tan looks like an illegal. He was working in a facory that makes those big cement pipes they use underground for water drainage. He was on the night shift and was coming home at 3 in the morning. A cop stopped him for no reason he could give my son. J.R. got out of his car and gave permission for the cop to do a seach and when the officer saw his big tote bag..his eyes lit up! He asked..what's in there? J.R. said just my lunch and a jacket Sir. When the cop saw all the plastic bowls with watermelon seeds and leftover soup..he cracked up and sent my son on his way.
J.R. has been told to be polite, co-operate and be truthful to the police, it stood him in good stead because with his head band on (to keep cement out of his hair) and his grungy outfit..he looked like a thug.
But I was still livid that he was stopped by this hick town cop for racial profiling!!!
I will never drive through AZ because I don't have a green card since I was born in Denver..but I look like a Mexican abuela. (Old lady/grandma). This profiling of American citizens is appalling! I do understand that the illegals are out of hand all over..but some hispanics were born here! Some have more generations of Americans then some blueboods!
We need to come down hard on the employers and enforce the laws that are already in effect.
Glow, I am sorry you had trouble, it's scary as heck. But you didn't do anything to be stooped for..so it's the cop's bad. But you do need to carry your bona fides at all times! LOL The e-cigs a bit new..so cards for those too.

I have a section in my purse FULL of business cards from everyone I've ever purchased anything to do with ecigs. I carry spares to hand out, but I always carry some to be sure that I have some type of literature. I haven't been pulled over yet, and my motto is always to kill 'em with kindness. My fav business card is from vaporbomb and the back reads:

The person presenting this card is using a personal vaporizer aka an e-cigarette. This e-cigarette does not produce any smoke like the traditional cigarette. What you are seeing is vapor. Not unlike the vapor from a fog machine. This vapor is made up of 99% water, and 1% of nicotine and food flavorings.

Knowledge is power! And with the tourists in my area, I NEED to vape while driving, so I don't get pulled over for road rage lol.

If I were in your situation, I would send the ticket in not guilty and meet with the judge, full of smiles and sunshine! :)

All of us at one time or another has been pulled over for total BS. When my husband and I got together he drove a sporty little white neon with 2 stripes down the top. I was pulled over for dirty plates (not dirty) light being out on the plates (it wasnt) for directions twice (I think when they saw who was driving they changed what they were gonna do) and been obviously followed by them all over town. Everyone is profiled its the way people work. I'm sure the cops thought I was a drug dealer or a punk kid with a fun fast car. As long as you have all your stuff in order "they" can't do much to you. Live and learn times change I use to feel safe enough driving up to the corner store for a coke or something without my purse(no license), now I know better and don't wanna take a down town trip cause a cop is bored and pushes everything to the letter.

I was so glad to trade that car in :). But the little 5 spd sure was fun to drive.
