Lag between coils

I just ordered my first rda and plan on using cotton as a wick.
I understand building the coils and the process of doing the wick, but on question I have is that after you put the coils on and they don't get that red - smoldering look on the wire at the same time, what do you do?

Poke at them until they all glow evenly. It usually doesn't take much movement to make a huge difference.

I don't want to be that guy, but you know that you can't wick a coil with cotton and then adjust your wraps like you can with silica?
