Hi there everybody,

I've been lurking around here forever it seems like, and I just thought I'd share this lame "mod" due to it's awesome results :)

I saw these over on TigerDirect:

Duracell DR7000LI Instant Power Charger for USB Devices at TigerDirect.com

It says "Enjoy up to 35 hours of instant plug-in USB power", which I read as "up to 35 hours of vapin' on a PT " :) I ordered a couple of them in case they didn't last as long as I thought they would, but I've been super pleased. One batt lasts over a day of vaping for me, and they easily charge overnight.

One thing I noticed, I have two 510 PTs that have a AA battery in them, and these work like a charm. I ordered a nJoy PT because it had a neat wire retracting thing, but it didn't work with this, I presume because it doesn't have a AA battery in it (?).

In any event, it has solved one of my main gripes about vaping, the battery life. As long as I don't mind looking like a dork with this long cable sticking out of my pocket when I vape, I'm good to go :)

Now if I could just fix the other issue, having a cart that lasts all day (or at least most of it) I'll be all set.

Well, except for the looking like a dork thing :)

Hope it helps somebody else too!

WQ

edit: btw, I'm just calling it "lame" because I didn't do any super-cool soldering or anything, just plug-and-play. Don't mean to offend if someone else already did this, just using a little self-effacing humor :)

So, if I understand you correctly, what you did was purchase a battery pack that your PT plugs into to charge the 10440, the 'aa' you in your PT (unless it's a mod) is a 10440 'aaa' sized Li-Ion batt.
That's cool.. It's not a mod (since you're using everything for it's intended purpose), but it's cool...
I had the same idea about 7 months ago. I wanted ones that used standard batts though, and about $10 plus shipping was as cheap as I could find either style. So instead, for about $6, I got 4 NiMH rechargable aa's, a 4 aa batt box and a sacrificial usb extension cord and modded one myself (no solder, I just twisted usb +- to batt box +- then taped it).
Still, a good idea, great minds and everything...

here's a pic of my homemade 4aa usb charger:

sooooo Bob.... are you using an external charger to charge the batteries and then putting them in this unit for portable power for your PT or can you charge the batteries from the USB w/o removing them?

I want to recharge the 4 AAA's in my puck via USB and am trying to figure out how I can do it.,....

Heh... No, it's the easy way, using external NiMH charger... Just use(d) this to power my PT on the go... My 4aa puck mod has gone over 80 hours between charges, so I just charge those batts every couple of days. I don't really use this anymore, rather keep it around just in case, but I did rewire it recently (got rid of the elect tape and red/black wires, soldered the usb wires into the box and tucked the usb cord cover into the box), so I should prolly take new pics, now that it's not as ugly....

Sorry Jim, but trying to charge NiMH batts inside a mod is over my head (I've seen the chips for Li-ion, but not for NiMH)...

Thanks Bob.... I thought it would be easier but can't find much on it.... I might have to switch battery types for my next mod. I like the external 4x AA power pack. I have to orders some USB connections so I can play around.....

4 X AA Battery Holder Box 1PCS 5V DC USB OUTPUT NEW!!! - eBay (item 150491211730 end time Dec-08-10 06:09:37 PST)

it looks like this is the same thing. But like you guys I was looking for a way to charge the batts in the case via usb, basically the opposite of what this box was intended for. I got 10 of these things coming from taiwan for 27.00 so I could not really pass up the deal as I can use em for parts and such if they dont suit my purpose. Has there been any success finding something in the meantime that does the usb in charging?

I'm surprised because it says it is only 1 amp. I'm glad your having success with it.

This could be why he's having success with the passthrough that holds a battery and not the one without.
It's putting out just enough juice to keep the battery charged but not enough to power a passthrough directly.
