I found this video on Youtube:
That gave me an idea: I set a drop of juice on a small piece of sheetmetal, and shone my 1W laser onto it. The drop promptly went psshh and gave off a decent amount of vapor.
So I'm thinking: imagine a high-power laser pointer. Screwed on top of it, a cylindrical, clear tank half-full of juice and a small, hollow, slightly undersized blackened metal ball made of very thin sheetmetal floating on top of the juice. Above the ball, all around the periphery of the top of the tank, very thin holes to let air through, but small enough to prevent the juice from dripping if the tank is tilted upside down. And on top of all that, the mouthpiece.
Now, when you press the go-go button, the laser shines onto the bottom side of the ball through the juice (provided it's reasonably clear) and heats it up. The juice the balls floats onto heats up too and vaporizes. The vapor is drawn up around the ball and through the mouthpiece.
Imagine that eh? No wick, no coil, and a tenth of the power requirements of mods available today! I'm almost tempted to make a prototype...
