I was a 2.5-3 pad for last 20 years; 1.5 to 2 pad for 20 years prior to that. American Spirit Organic since they came out. Mild smoke but pretty high nic with much less contaminants than others. Whenever I had to go, even a couple of hours, without an analog I would use a patch. Being a "master" quitter I have experienced true nicotine withdrawal on several occasions. One time when I cold turkeyed, using acupuncture, DH, an M.D. suggested I check into a hospital. He was serious.
18-24 mg pretty much does it for me, most of the time, chain vaping, most of the time about 16 hours a day. Sometimes I feel like I need more nic so I've ordered, and just got in some straight, no flavor, nic juice to mix in a small bottle with my regular juices, just for those times when I feel like I "need" more nic. That's usually first thing in morning with coffee and afternoon when I go out and sit by pool, with glass of wine, before doing outside chores.
I'm going to do some extensive studying before I use the straight nic juice so I'll know exactly what I'm doing.
Interesting thing though.... now that I'm vaping I can go several hours without any nic craving. I don't even carry a PV shopping even if I'm going to be without for several hours.
I've tried smoking an analog to soothe the craving when it occasionally happens. That doesn't work for me.
On a side note..... years ago, one of my sisters, a pretty heavy smoker, was in hospital for surgery. She used a patch. After a few hours she started showing signs of nicotine overdose. Everyone is different. You'll find a good point that is just right for you. Just takes a little experimenting.
