I am fairly new to Vapeing (11 weeks). I started with the need to quit analog cigarettes because of the grief and shame I was feeling from family, coworkers and patients. The whole smelling like a wet ashtray was not appealing to them or even myself. It was embarrassing.

Now here is the crutch of my post. My co-workers, friends, and family (my wife especially) were are all under the impression that I was trying to give up my nicotine enjoyment. Admittedly that was the initial intention, however I quickly learned that I do not have to. I used to sneak away for a smoke and try like hell to wash the smell away (BTW: soap and water don’t work). If I did not get my craving addressed I would get mean and crabby. My wife knows I have a PV I have just never shared with her how often I enjoy it (still some shame because of her desire for me to be nicotine free:facepalm:). I have vaped in the house and no one but me is aware.

The media is also attempting to down play and trash talk vapeing because the trend of vape users is growing. This is the opposite of what all the non-smokers were wanting. Their idea was that if we started vapeing that we would quit all together. Ultimately there would be this Shangri-La world were no one would use nicotine because the nonsmokers know that nicotine is evil. Throughout the history of man there are many examples where oppression has occurred because some group felt that they knew what was better for the rest. My main example is prohibition. I could name so many others but my point is for vapeing not to show my knowledge of history. I think I am sick and tired of others deciding what is good for me. Vapeing gets the second hand smoke out of the picture and yet the nonsmokers still don’t seem happy. What is the deal:confused:?

Please let me vape in peace.

Peace, Love, and vape

WELCOME TO THE ECF

I'm glad that you have made the choice to vape. There are a lot of people that have the misinterpretation of what ecigs are and what they do for people's health/well being. The media doesn't help neither with false information that is being thrown to offset the trend. This in large is helping the tobacco companies out by making it harder for people to quit smoking cigs and the rate of death from health related illnesses will continue to rise.

Until the larger segment of the population can grasp the importance of this than I will say this....

Who cares what others say and think. Do what you do to improve your health and lifestyle. That's what really counts.

Howdy!!!! This place is great for information, funny stories, and support. You're sure to find someone here that has been in the same situation no matter the circumstances.

Sorry to hear you don't have more support at home. My family is thrilled and they get excited with me when I find a new flavor or learn yet another way to cut the cost of this hobby/addiction.

Maybe if you showed them it is possible to lower the nic intake little by little until you are weaned off completely?? I mean, isn't that how the patch works? No one seems to have issues with that proccess of quitting smoking.

Anyway, Welcome to ECF!!

+1 for CG! It IS possible to slowly work your way down on nic but read through ECF and CASAA's website on the health reports on nic. I started vaping back in January at 18-24mg nic liquid. As of this week, I've graduated down to just under 4 (I mix my own). So it is possible to wean yourself off but remind folks of the benefits of vaping over smoking. No burning. No foul oders. NO 4000+ chemicals, tar & carcinogens. Yes you are getting nic but so what? How many specialty coffee's do your friends and family drink a day? Does anyone give them a hard time for their caffeine intake?

Welcome to the board and you should be proud of your accomplishment. Don't let them knock you down!!

I think if the whole planet suddenly quit smoking overnight a whole lot of non-smokers would have nothing to focus their dissatisfaction with life on. With smoking out of the way they would soon target something else, exhaust fumes, fat people, whatever. I genuinely think a lot of these people try to impose their will on the lives of others because they cannot control their own.

The non-smokers will not be satisfied until you are as miserable as they are.

Ignore them, enjoy your vape :thumb: :vapor: and welcome to ECF!

Welcome! Yes, it's a problem for most of us I think. Non-smokers those who have never been smokers, and those who have become militant ex-smokers, can't and probably never will understand. It still looks like smoking, so it must be bad -- see? It contains evil nicotine! That's cigarette smoke! So you haven't really quit, have you? You're still technically smoking! As I posted in another thread (though for a slightly different reason), to quote Charles Darwin, "Ignorance breeds confidence more often than does knowledge."

Between the busy-body ignoramuses and the so-called health politicos who want to ban them altogether, we have a few decks stacked against us. But we're growing in number by leaps and bounds, and I think with time and perseverance we will prevail.

There isn't really any need to totally quit nicotine unless you have an unusual health-related reason to do so. There is no evidence that nicotine is any more harmful than caffeine/coffee or alcohol, when all are taken in small quantities. Like all these things, it's probably a good idea to take as little as you are comfortable with, overdoing anything is not good.

You can consider yourself an ex-smoker who has quit, or as a smoker using an alternative nicotine supply or a harm-reduction solution. It's up to you which of the two you pick, and hardly of any importance - but as far as others are concerned (nagging family members for example) you might choose the 'I've quit' option.

Also consider these points:
-- Everybody tests positive for nicotine as it is an ingredient in many vegetables. In a test of 800 people by the CDC, all tested positive.
-- Nicotine is a vitamin: Vitamin B3 or Niacin. Obviously, it is not toxic in very small quantities - in fact everyone needs it. However like many substances, it is all about the dose - too much is not good, and like Vitamin D, will kill you.
-- It is quite possible that some people need more than others. This may also be the case if your family smoked while you were young, or if you started smoking while young.
-- Nicotine is being used for more medical purposes every year - there are several conditions for which it is proven helpful.
-- If somebody wishes to avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine or anything similar for religious reasons then that is another matter. They should have the right to do what they like.
-- A sensible person would probably want to limit their intake of this or any other similar substance to the minimum that is acceptable at any given time. It's like chocolate (or in my case Haagen Daz Belgian Chocolate ice cream) - wonderful in small amounts but a lot of it is just not going to be good for you. Moderation is the key.

I would suggest to your family that if they are willing to cut out coffee, tea, wine, beer, gin, chocolate, and anything else that is pleasurable and helps to relieve the daily grind and also contains some sort of 'upper' (even chocolate has this), then you'll try to cut out nicotine. Otherwise, it is simply hypocrisy on their part and they need to button up :)
