Hey guys I have been vaping for a while now but i wanna learn how to build my own coils. I want to start building subohm coils, and i know you need to know alot before that so can you please give me some tips and pointers. I have an igo-w on a k101 for one setup and a freakshow atty on a ragnarok mod for another. My batteries are 2 sony vtc 5's, an efest 1600 mah, and a lg 2500 mah i think.

howdy! and welcome!

do your homework first on the battery safety - sub ohm builds can push the capacity of your batteries, best to load the bases in your favor from the get go... check out @Baditude 's blog on ohm's law and battery safety ( @Mooch has some great info on battery bench tests)... make sure you have an ohm meter for testing your builds before you fire them... keep asking questions here... watch some basic coil building tutorials on youtube (riptrippers, grimgreen are some that come to mind off the top of my head)... walk before you run - don't try to jump into building .15ohm fused clapton alien wire ninja hoobastank coils - start simple, lol

be safe, have some fun, do your homework - coil building can be a pretty engaging hobby - some of the folks around here can give you a lot more info, but that should get you started on the right path

If you don't currently have an ohm meter, multimeter, or atomizer resistance tester, it would be a good idea to pick one up. You can spend $10 and up, and most of them are accurate enough as long as you're not pushing close to a dead short with your coils (which I wouldn't recommend on an unregulated mod).

Save the money and just buy a coil kit instead of piecing it together as you go. That's my opinion because now I have 2 of something or one thing is cap quality or blah. Just get a good starter kit. Lots of research and you'll be talking like RIP in no time. P'S 28ga kanthal is your best friend.

What usually comes in a coil kit because i was going to get an ohm reader, wire cutters, and idk what gauge wire im going to get yet.

Well I use screw driver or allen key , wire cutters , ohm meter , something to wrap the coil around (use a coil tool but have used other things in the past) , something to hold the coil in place when you secure it to the atty , pliers just if some builds are a tad thick and need to pull them through the holes.
Some people use tweezers usually ceramic tipped if they want to squeeze the coil but with the coil tool I use theres no need for that.
For wire I get 26g and 30g kanthal and nichrome.

So if a coil kit has those items then sounds good but depends on what you already have around the house.

This looks solid. I'd rather have spent the $50 up front rather than piecing it together.
28ga kanthal will do a lot for you. It's great for single, dual, twisted, zipper coils and so much more. Then I would get 32ga and 26 ga. And you could do clapton eventually. I personally had good learning experience with these gauges. And 24 ga if you have the budget.

All of that, usually, plus mandrels to wind coils on. You're heading in the right direction. The only tool I find really handy you can't get in a coil kit is a butane pencil torch to anneal Kanthal builds. +1 to @dcfluegel , learn how on here and you tube before blowing yourself up, and +100 to "you need an ohmmeter." Welcome to the board, and have fun. I have been safely building coils for mech mods for years; it can be done. Come and talk to us before doing anything wild until you get the hang of it:)

I would not make a goal of going sub-ohm, just find the sweet spot where you like your vape best, and if it happens to be less than 1 ohm so be it, but make sure your batteries can take it before you go there. There are no prizes given out for the lowest sub-ohm build, but there are some battery mishaps awarded, unexpectedly. You don't want that.
