That is Whiskers. When I was 9.. My parents had split up, my mom moved to Oregon and my dad and I were living in a tiiiiiny apartment. We adopted a cat which I named Tigger. I think my mom got him for me, but she had just found him so he was pretty feral, he ended up running away.

When she came back from Oregon she knocked on the door with 2 kittens. A white & black one, and a tabby. In the eyes of a little girl who has been knocked around and wronged and lost a beloved pet, those kittens meant the world to me. My dad hated them. I named the tabby "Whiskers" after a scene in Toy Story, where T-Rex yells out the window, "WHISKERS!! GET OUT OF THERE. You're interfering with a search and rescue!!" .. And the white & black cat I named Frisky.

Fast forward a few years.. My dad and I are living with his new boyfriend Dan, and Frisky never learned how to use a litter box. My dad always said "Once a dirty cat, always a dirty cat." So we got rid of him and kept Whiskers. Whiskers must have known why Frisky got the boot, and took it as a warning. Because from that day on, he never defecated nor urinated anywhere but the litter box.

Whiskers stuck with my dad and I, and became the most precious part of my childhood. He wasn't just any cat, he was my cat, and he was the sweetest on the planet. They say that cats are preferred over dogs because they are "loners" and generally require less attention.. That was not true with my cat. There are no words to describe how absolutely love starved he always seemed to be. He could sit in my lap for hours purring away as I scratched his ears. He was a great companion and a wonderful listener.

I imagine Whiskers is about 13 - 14 years old now, and I no longer have him. I went and fell in love with my husband (a picture of which you can view in the 'show me your dogs' thread) who happens to have a very serious allergy to most animals... But mostly cats. I had to give Whiskers away when he moved in, to a good friend who I trust. I hear that he is still fat and happy and healthy, they contacted me for his shot records not too long ago, so I know he's being taken care of. I miss my cat more than I can say. He was given to me by my mom, who lies in heaven now.. and lately I've really been missing the company of that wonderful animal she gave me so many years ago.

I think sometimes though.. It's better this way. I could not have watched him fade from this life.

David Bowie had perfect hearing. He could hear the crinkle of the treat bag through the whole house. As cute as he was, it took over a year and placing him in two homes before he found a forever family. He ended up with a Librarian at my housemate's work. Librarians are suckers, if you ever need to find a cat a home :)

One of the dogs, the poodle, is deaf. I constantly find myself calling a deaf dog.

Enid- is David Bowie deaf? We had an all white kitty who was deaf. The vet said that 80% of all white females are deaf and even higher if their eyes don't match! About 50% for males.

Awww, Sallana, you made me cry.
I totally understand just how important cats (and dogs) are to us when we are younger and even as we get older. I dropped out of college to go back and get my cat, when I found out that my dad had her locked in a tiny backporch closet 24/7 with a nasty litterbox and hardly any food. As a child who grew up around lots of chaos, I couldn't leave my cat behind in it, not even to better myself.
(hugs) I'm glad that Whiskers has a great home.

Sheila saved Tiny's life 3 years ago. He was a runt and wasn't thriving at all. She's never had pups and was only 6 months old herself when she started nursing him. Now, Tiny still nurses occasionally (he's almost as big as Sheila), and she'll start making milk for him.

My black kitty is Winky =) I got him when he was 2 from a gal that worked in a groomers. She had to move in with her daughter who already had 4 cats so since my ex husband had moved out (he was highly allergic) I agreed to take him home I got my first kitty! He only has one eye, which is why he's called Winky  Something happened when he was a kitten and a vet had to remove his eye =( He is a big boy though! Winky is around 6 yrs old now and he's mommas boy =)

The other kitty is Coco, she was the runt of a stray litter wandering around my work, also the sweetest and only kitten that would come up to people. We got her at about 6 weeks. My daughter loves her more than anything! She is about 3 now.

Kitty Pics...okay I finally have some besides my avatar.

Boo is my avatar and my latest edition to the fury family. He was 2 months old in the avatar. My daughter was in a fashion show hosted by the local shelter. Boo came home with her that day. Yes, he still talks. Here he is at 7 months and 12lbs. He's asleep in a dog bed.

Next up is Maxie. She's a polydactyl (I think that's what it's called). It means 6 toes. Really cool, she has mitten feet. She's 3. Her eyes are blue. My camera didn't want to take a good picture.
DSC00179.jpg

Maxie's sister Mia. I still don't see how they are sisters except for their feet. Maxie has 6 toes on each foot but Mia only has them on the front. If you look closely at her front paw, it looks like she has hands. Also 3 years old.

Shadow is 3 years old. She was very starved when found by a friend's sister. Brought to me to be saved and has been living happily ever since. Only problem with her is if strangers come over, you will never see her. I call her my OCD Kitty. She doesn't like anyone but me. Husband can't touch her at all and my daughter can only briefly pet her. Noone can handle her but me. I had her spayed about 2 months ago. She never went into heat so I didn't feel the need to do it. Her cycle decided to show itself and off she went to see the vet. Needless to say, the vet was shredded repeatedly until they could knock her out for surgery. When I went to get her, I had to go into the back and get her out of the cage, vet tech was too scared to do it...LOL.

Last is Turbo. Bottle fed by me and raised by my 6 dogs. Loves to give headbutt lovin's and kisses. Turbo is pushing 4. He was very sick for about his first 4 months. Constant vet visits and medication but he pulled through. Now he's my lap cat. Likes to protest about the other cats to me. He'll get infront of me on the desk, lay his ears back, snarl a little, and look at whoever needs to be tattled on. He's my big love bug.

Buster is on the left, and loves reusable grocery bags. I have to hide them or he'd lick them until there was nothing left. He won't touch a plastic bag.

Lily, who is about 1/2 of Buster's size, loves plastic bags. She will eat them, so I have to make sure there aren't any left around. I had something to return to Walmart the other day, and when I got up to the counter, I found that Lily had chewed a perfect little hole right in the middle of it.

(about a year ago I learned that chicken feed (specifically NON-MEDICATED broiler crumbles) is an excellent cat litter. It clumps, and really controls odor better than any litter I've ever used. I get fifty pound bags for around $12, and I've actually changed the plastic box liner, and kept the same "litter" in the box. Thankfully Lily doesn't try to eat those bags. LOL) The best part is I can dump the used litter in the woods behind my house, since it's just corn. Each trash bag we bring to the dump is $2.75, so not having to throw away all the used litter is a nice added benefit.)

Brewlady, is this flushable? I'm using wheat litter now, and it is safe and flushable, but I have to completely change the litter out every 3 weeks or it gets pretty strong. I'd love to find something that flushes and registers lower on the smell-o-meter.

Everything You Wanted To Know About World's Best Cat Litter

Yes, according to this website. The cat litter sold here is IDENTICAL to chicken feed (but much more expensive because it's marketed as cat litter). If you google "chicken feed cat litter" you'll find lots of info. I haven't had any problems using it, but I don't flush it, so I have to defer to what the website says.

The trick is to get the entire clump, if it breaks up it will get smelly eventually, but I've been able to just keep adding more with pretty good luck.
