A step backwards if you ask me. Unless they subsidize shipping costs this will kill small online shops. All it will do is redirect spending to stores like walmart that offer in store pickup to avoid shipping costs. For middle class america this is not good news. Could be i'm just sensitive about taxes, I used to pay 9 a pack for smokes thanks to Massachusetts.

I think it will hurt them and ultimately us a lot. The only thing that Ive seen that our current administration is good at is generating more paperwork and lost revenues for everyone.

First Hostess goes out and business and Twinkies die. Those things stay good for 10 years in the wrapper

Then Olive Garden threatens to employ only part time workers because of how much the changes are costing them

And now a sales tax for online purchases.

I dont know about you but Im starting to think someone is the anti-christ.

The other side of that is places like Amazon are killing B&M stores because they pay little or no tax with the added benefit of not having to pay for store space.

What kills most small online shops is bigger online shops offering the same products for cheaper and less shipping costs.

I use the free shipping services by Walmart, Staples and Best buy.

I think the last administration has gotten us in to the mess we are in and this one isnt much better. Unfortunately we have to bail our way out and that is going to hurt. The problem I have is our government is not responsible with the money they get now. It would hurt a lot less if we knew some better days were coming but I do not see that. So It feels like to me Im having my Money taken and wasted.
So online taxes are just feeding the monster more so it can grow

Hostess filed for bankrupty the first time in 2004, never fully recovered; must be the anti-christ

Olive Garden looking for cheaper labor, companies never look for cheaper labor and give any excuse possible; must be the anti-christ

Online sales tax has been in talks for a very long time, they are just getting around to it now; must be the anti-christ

People letting rhetoric cloud their thinking; must be the anti-christ

Me tired of hearing the ridiculous rhetoric; must be the anti-christ

Someone actually thinking someone is the anti-christ; must be the anti-christ

People not liking this post; must be the anti-christ

Theres nothing at all clouded about my thinking. I respect that you have a different opinion but dont try to make me seem less intelligent than you are to support those opinions.

Resorting to personal attacks because I spoke my mind? Definitely the anti-christ. Just like you, he wouldn't want you to voice any opinion but his own.

Technically, aren't you supposed to pay taxes yourself on online purchases? In CA, they started charging sales tax for some online vendors. It's still weird for me to see it on my Amazon charges, but I think it's fair.

Don't know about all states, but in NC you're supposed to do it, kind of like the honor system.

I think you only had to pay taxes if you were in the same state, at least that's how it works in VA.

Yep I made an online order and the sales tax was included. When I had my skin care thing going I had to factor in the taxes. This is going to be a nation wide sales tax on all online orders. The new tax laws coming into effect this year are quite daunting. I really feel for all of the quallity vendors out there and hope this doesn't kill them :( We are all going to pay for bailouts that probably shouldn't have gone down in the first place. IMO it was a delaying of the inevitable.

Texas has a sales tax but we have no state income tax (Thank God!). Up to now we only had to pay 8.25% sales tax if the vendor was in Texas also.

We have state bill that includes distribution centers also:
"The Texas Senate approved by a 30-to-1 vote Friday a bill that would require online and catalog retailers with an in-state physical presence, such as stores or distribution centers, to collect and remit sales tax even if those facilities are operated by subsidiaries."

But the link you gave said all online businesses would have to collect the state tax to pay it. That is insane! It would be time to invest in some bitcoin and start using Tor to buy items (untraceable money and anonymous transactions.)

What frustrates me is this type of taxation implies ownership of the individual. This has the potential to be widely abused. As a Massachusetts resident, I drove to NH (20min) to buy a carton of smokes tax free. I used my debit card and was charged Ma. state tax when I checked my bank account. This is offensive to me. When I'm in NH I play by their rules, in Ma. I pay tax. If I go to Canada, the US can *** off for all I care. If I had the means to leave this country I would.
