wow, makes us all realize how lucky wee are to be living in free countries. We complain about our governments interferance in our lives, but we really have no idea what its like to live under a corrupt government. ..........I count myself grateful, and commend you for being brave enough to return. I know I wouldn't have. ......

I just watched a show about the insane amount of drugs going to the cartel from Nicaragua.

Fishing in Nicaraguan waters, I see the loads pass by on a regular basis. In 2011 I was a part of a documentary, made for the Berlin Film Festival, focussing on "white lobster". On the Atlantic Coast there is a shallow water bank (2 fathoms on average) extending 60 miles offshore, completely uncharted. The Cartelleros run the dope at night, up the coast. If they are spotted by the U.S. drug planes (Coast Guard and Navy), they jettison the dope in order to flee quicker. Since the wind blows out of the east 24/7/365, the dope will eventually wind up on the beach. The locals gather up the dope and the local cartellero buys it back for the going rate. Many Nica's have made their fortune this way. Google "white lobster" and you will see ...

These are the negatives. There are many more positive points which, to me, make it a paradise which hasn't yet been discovered by the masses. I am the only American living in El Bluff ...

So if you weren't popular, would they have let you starve to death? Could a family provide a gourmet meal or were they restricted to rice and beans?

Let me starve to death ? I'm sure they wouldn't have stopped me, LOL ! If a family provided a gourmet meal, I'm sure it would have been consumed by the Police who are charged with checking all incoming food. I've never been to jail in the States, but I'm sure that it would be like a 4 star hotel compared to Nicaraguan jails. Prisons are all in the mountains, with inmates doing forced labor in the gold mines.

CaptEd, that is an amazing story. How did you lose your ECF account. Oh, for those that don't know CE was here before now. He was around back in the day of the BP's Gulf oil spills.

I wondered what happened to you. I think the last we communicated was as you were setting up that fishing gear in Nicaragua. Fortunately, it sounds like you're pretty established at this point. I'll PM you a bit later.

Sooo... if this whole FDA thing goes down, would you want a neighbor... or approximately 5,000? ;)

Once you get finished adventuring you should think about taking up writing for a living. You definitely spin a great tale. :)

Yup, I could see myself sitting on a beach chair, under an umbrella, sipping some tropical concoction with binoculars in hand, searching the horizon for my white lobster cache. I'll bet you could pick up beach front property for a song.

I guess I'm not a very good 'net Forum member, but it is hard for me to log on on a daily basis, so my replies are late again ...

LOL !!! I don't think I'm "adventuring", I'm just not happy with a "normal job" in one place. I love travelling, seeing the differences in culture and society. As for writing, I'm afraid my 8th grade education just isn't up to that ...

Spin a great tale ? I appreciate the intended complement, but I am simply relating my bad experience. Thanks for the support, everyone.

Wow, you punched a child in the nose? And broke it?
... it was very hunter s. thompson-esque.
He wasn't a child, he was a short, young adolescent of indian extraction. He was at least 18 (not a minor), and certainly deserved everything I gave him.

As for being H.S. Thompson-esque, I take that as a complement, as I think it was intended ...

Oh, a midget. They must not have liked him.
Don't mess with fishermen!

LOL !!! Jim, I think maybe that was you in the documentary ? In the first scene, while walking the beach, I passed a fellow in a chair, searching the horizon for his white lobster catch.
