ok so im new to vaping, only been vaping since christmas day. i started with a skycig and yeah ive just recived my 1st mod today (L-rider lambo 4.0) although it was advertised on the website as a lavatube (confused)... i decided after reading various things on here that mods are the way to go.

so yeah just made a BIG mistake and i think ive screwed 2 of my cartomizers up. i was playing around with it and different voltages i put it on like 5.0v coz its goes to 6.0v i thought i would be fine trying it at that voltage.... how wrong i was! i got a horrible taste like i was smoking a cigerette filter and now im left with that nasty taste in my cartomizer. Few questions....

1. Is there any kind of guide to what voltage i should vape at?
2. Are both of my cartomizers dead now?
3. I find the flavours are much different compared to when i had them in my SKYCIG and not really as nice imo, could this be because of the chrome drip tip insted of the plastic carto in the skycig, or is it simply the voltage?
4. Im finding it very wierd to vape this mod im getting loads of vapour and crazy throat hits, its not really the same as when im pulling on my SKYCIG, is this something i will get used to?

Sorry for sounding like such an idiot... but i am one!

Here's a few things that should help you out since you (no offense) kinda neglected researching a bit :p

1. The "horrible taste" is dry burn, and it ruined all the fluid that's in that cartomizer, trash it.
2. Different voltage requires different ohms of resistance to match it. Think of it this way...ohms are to volts as rubber soled shoes are to electricians. They prevent too much current from traveling to your carto/atomizer, etc. and frying it.
3. Flavors will be more, or less potent depending on a number of factors, such as mix of PG/VG, amount of nicotine, voltage, wattage, ohms, and amount of flavor added, as well as storage temperature, storage method, and whether or not they've been steeped, and how long they steeped.

4. SKYCIG is an automatic POS that uses minimal voltage, tiny batteries, and low wattage with minor ohms of resistance, so it'll NEVER puff like the big boys do.

This guide will tell you what volts and wattage are safe for your cartomizers individual specifications of ohms.

No offence taken!, i know now that i should of done more research into this. so basically when i click the button 5 times it comes up with the resistance of my atomizer, im assuming the higher the resistance the more volts it can handle? is if its a low res then i should only vape it at a low voltage? Also insted of doing the maths for what is safe can i just start it at 3.0v then dial it up till i hit that 'sweet spot'?

Now you're catching on!!! I always start low and work my way up to the sweet spot.

You'll learn a LOT in the coming months depending on the previous amount of electrical knowledge you had previously.
Vince Clortho is right! You're not an idiot, and you've proven that by taking the step to stop letting your government kill you with cigarettes! There's a HUGE learning curve of sorts when it comes to vaping. I started off the same way you did in July of last year.
I'd purchased a small one from 7/11 for a roadtrip with my daughter, and wife, and needed something to settle me for the eight hours I'd be driving. I found the small automatic's to be disgusting, bland, and flavorless, so I started doing research on different stuff. SEVERAL hundred dollars later I'd come to find all of my mistakes could have been avoided knowing about this forum, and once i found out about it...HAHAHA, HOLY S**T did I dig in like Scooby, and Shaggy at a hamburger joint after exiting the closet of smoke! I found myself reading almost EVERY thread that was posted, talking about anything, and everything, and now I'm at a point where just a mere 3 months after joining here I'm comfortable not only vaping, and using new gear - but making my own fluid.

You'll get there eventually, and i didn't mean it offensively, I'd just MUCH rather assume someone didn't do research than they did, and just weren't paying attention ^_^ Besides, I know first hand it's EASY to THINK that you're ready when you get into this "game" called Vaping, but it's something where you're never quite sure, until you're SURE!
Good Luck, and Vape on! If you ever have questions please feel free to pm me, I've got NUMEROUS ways you can get ahold of me, since I'm a programmer, web developer, and graphic artist and am at my computer roughly 20 hours a day I'm kinda like live support. ^_^

Yes, and no...
Yes, you can dial the voltage up from each Ohm's recommended voltage range, but NO you dont' want to go below that, and HELL NO you don't want to go above.
Here's the thing with Variable Voltage - Your device LCD may show you to be vaping at 3.0 volts, which would be GREAT for Low Resistance cartomizers typically ranging from 1.8-2.4Ohms
However, under load (once the cartomizer is on, and it's "fired" that 3.0 volts that's coming out at or around 3.05 volts COULD potentially drop down to as far as 2.8 volts "under load." What this means is that TECHNICALLY (although I'm not sure how recommended it would be) you COULD potentially raise the voltage to smaller increments above the recommended amount of voltage, BUT you'd better be ready to risk some cartomizers before you go trying that. Too high of voltage, and it's fried, friend.

Also, something I forgot to mention earlier, do your homework on how to fill a cartomizer, and let it prime. yeah, I know it seems like common sense - drop here, let soak, drop again, rinse, and repeat 'till it's full-ish then smoke...WRONG...you've given it time to soak into the polyfill, but NOT onto the coil.
There are instructional videos, and guides out there for every kind of anything you could run across done by the great people of this, and a few other forums. They'll be MORE than happy to show you the proper way to use your equipment. The goal here is pay it forward, and help one more person ditch "analogs" so that we don't kill ourselves by doing things that are legal, and shouldn't be.
