I have a Buzz from Notcigs. It is variable voltage and everything I need in a od for less than $100 The thing is a work horse. Very sturdy and reliable :)

I second this PV....I have 4 of them set at different voltages with different flavors. Great mod, great customer service, and great warranty.

Hello, I'm a semi recent convert from analogs, but since started vaping more kick and bigger for when I'm just sitting at home relaxing.

Pass-Thru (Battery eliminator)
Running @ 5v / 2amp

Costs :
$12-20 (or free, if you're a DIY'er)
$10-30 Power Adapter like this set :
Walmart.com: Griffin Technology PowerDuo for iPad/iPhone/iPod: iPad & eReaders
$8-10 Pack of Carto's

I just got into this type of setup after starting less than 2 weeks ago....
Made a custom Pass-Thru out of a mini flashlight + usb cable, and picked up the Griffin 2amp duo charger kit today.... It really is nice to vape around the house, and keep my batteries fresh for when I head out & about or go to work... Plus, I can plug my cable into my car cig lighter so as not to run my battery down driving to work.

There are lots of pass-thru options.... as well as adapter options... I almost went with a 1amp adapter, but i'm glad I picked up the 2amp... Vapor production is fantastic especially with BOGE cartos...

It's just my personal preference but I don't like PT's. I've got one and never use it. Being attached to a computer doesn't appeal to me. With a big batt rig you don't really have to worry about running out of power. A 900mah batt lasts most of a day, my 2600mah batt's go all day or longer and I'm not tied down with a cord. But to each their own and I'll keep my PT for just in case.

...I know nothing going to be as simple as screwing on a carto and puffing away...

Unless it's a 5v GLV-2. Probably the simplest to use, most consistent and indestructible mod on the market. There's a reason they have a lifetime warranty. GLVs are certainly more expensive than an Inferno, eGo, Riva, etc. but well worth every penny.
