Hey guys So I'm trying to buy my first mech mod and I want to start of with a clone just so that i can get something cheap and to just get the swing of things before I pour $100s of dollars on a mod. Anyway Im just looking for something reliable that is also very simple and sleek. So far my 2 considerations are the 4nine mod by infinite and the pegasus by Vapetech. Ive heard both are pretty good but I just want a all around reliable mod.

The only clones I have are an Hcigar Nemesis and a copper Vanilla clone. Both from 101vape, both were 30 bucks, and both work fantastic. Not sure I would recommend a 4nine mod to a beginner though - I have read that since there is no 510 connector - the atomizer makes direct contact with the battery - you can get a direct short accross the battery.

well isnt that the same as any mech mod. the atty still has direct contact with the positive side of the battery. The only way it will short is if the button gets pushed. Which is where i feel the problem is with the 4nine since it doesnt have a lockout for the button.

Um, no.

The 4nine has a threaded hole that goes directly through the top cap. The atty contacts the top of the battery DIRECTLY. If the center pin of the atomizer does not protrude far enough past the top cap into the mod it may create a dead short which may result in thermal run away and an exploding battery.

Reguardless on what kind of mod is being used, if the center pin of an atty touches the body it will be a direct short which would resuld in the end of a mech mod.

That is unless the top cap on the 4nine can spin down enough to where it can make contact with the positive part on the battery, then I would believe that is a flaw in the design which I would never buy. But if the threads stop before coming close to the positive part of the battery then it is good to go.

To the OP:

I'm not going to get into any back-and-forth with a third party over the semantics about what constitutes a 510 connector or a short circuit. The 4nine is a very popular mod and is perfectly safe if used correctly, HOWEVER it can be extremely dangerous it used incorrectly. Dont take my word for it though. If you do consider getting one please do a search here and see for yourself. Understand why it most certainly is different than other mods and can cause a dangerous condition if used incorrectly.

Personally, as a first mod I would avoid it.

Here's just a few threads to illustrate my point, I'm sure there are more:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/mechmods/569115-4nine-clone.html

...and this one, where a new user asks about a 4nine as a first mech mod and a LOT of responses recommend something else after expressing the same concerns I pointed out:

...and here:

There is another options now that will work real well for you and offer protection built in if used correctly.

Sigelei, IPV and others put out high wattage regulated mods that allow you to build safely because they have short protect and meters built into the PV. You can pick them up reasonably these days and if big clouds is what you are after the wattage will allow you to get there with a higher ohm coil.

Might be a good way to go for now.

I would recommend the Stingray X clone by Infinite or SXK. It can be had for $40 or so. It comes with a traditional 510 connection wth a silver plated copper pin and a brass hybrid adapter (like the 4Nine). You can learn how to safely use mech mods with the traditional connection, then change to the hybrid with you feel comfortable.

In hybrid mode, the SX is the same height as the 4Nine, yet still offers a locking ring.

Another advantage of the SX is that it's a copper mod, but it is wrapped in a stainless steel sleeve, making it much easier to maintain.

Whatever you go with, learn battery safety first. Build conservatively until you understand the characteristics of your mod. Remember with a mech mod, it will not give you an error message. It will fire anything you screw onto it. And the only tell tale sign that something is wrong is by the feel you get with (ie heat).

Thanks for all the replies guys but Im just not a huge fan of the look of the stingray. I prefer a more simple looking mod. I also like the copper mods because I want to be able to get a nice patina on it. Ill do my best in regards to understanding battery safety and I've already done some research. in regards to getting a ipv or other box, I would rather get a mech mod because I like the simplicity and the elegance plus I already have a vaporshark that Ive been vaping on for awhile and now and would like to expand my collection and get something different.
