I just received one of the smoktek VV Grippers only to find that it does not like working with clearomizers (Kanger T-2 in particular) and delivers a very strong hit along with a very burnt taste even when set to 3.0v.

Does anyone out there know of a box mod that offers VV, battery level check, resistance check, hopefully regulated and uses a 18650 battery?

And looks and feels nice as well?

Don't ask for much do I?

I stopped searching and settled on batts like the iTaste VV. For clearos it's great. The only thing it doesn't have is the resistance check and the 18650 batt.

I've been thinking about this too, although I have sorted out my issues with Gripper Burn simply by recoiling all my vn's to the 2 - 2.4Ω range, originally I thought maybe the juice had something to do with it - I use 30/70 pg/vg this has not been a problem since.
Now I can vape anywhere up to 3.8V, I like 3.2V best, I don't believe a non pwm mod will alter this, although I don't know for sure because I don't own a non pwm mod other than Twists and I don't think they count.

Because it's well known the Gripper is a little cranky and fragile, I've been looking into possible Internal swaps - I found this:
PTR08100W-voltage control (over-current protection built in) -chip. (pdf)

I know it has been used successfully in mod building in the UK, I don't know how easy it would be to swap out the existing Gripper chip and replacing it with this or if it's even compatible with the Grippers internals.
To my knowledge (limited) this is Not a pwm chip, but I too would like to move away from pwm with out the expense of moving to a higher end mod.

I'm hoping Rader and other ECF Modders could offer assistance /opinions /thoughts or experience with this chip or similar and difficulty involved in making such a swap should it be possible to do so.

Forgive my inexperience I could be writing a load of BS, perhaps I'm being over ambitious, but I am really keen to learn.

The TI PTR08100W is a Buck regulator (higher voltage "bucked" down to a lower voltage) so it would require 2 batteries. It also requires several external components to operate properly. Pretty much impossible to put into a Gripper.

SmokeTEK (not SmokeTech) makes their VariCool box mod using the Murieta OKR-T regulators. The regulator is properly filtered so the it provides a flat DC output so that you don't have to worry about the pulsed output or Vrms. It is a no-frills dual 14500 mod; no resistance check, no screen, no battery level indicator. But the regulator does have low voltage, over current, and short circuit protection built in.

SmokTek "SmokBox VariCool" - Custom Variable Volt Box Mod - Efficient switching regulator! adjustable 3,4,5,6.5 volt's & everything between.

I built my own modified version of it a while back after the switch on my gripper died, and I have to say that I prefer my OKR-T/6 well over the Gripper...even without all the bells and whistles.

I looked at the Varicool before I bought my Gripper. I was rather shallow in my decision, fell for the bells and whistles, although I'm not disappointed I really do love my Gripper. I suppose I just had high expectations on the possibility of chopping, swapping and modifying its internals with little required effort. What I wasn't aware of is the Varicool is also pwm although from what I understand reading the Varicool thread it's more efficient than the Gripper.
I read a New Gripper is coming out, it was rumoured on one of the other forums, have to wait and see if it's true.
I really just want to say thank you for taking the time and patience to explain it all. Much appreciated.
