First of all, thank you for all of the info I've found here.

I really had never heard much about e-cigs, except for the basic conceptual prototypes years ago.

I've done some reading of the stickies, and some threads, and have a basic idea of what direction to go, but I could really use a little push in the right direction.

I've been able to push myself down to 4-10 marb ultra-lights a day, without any issues, and I've "quit" for a few days in-a-row at times.

My SO however does still smoke, and while she's been doing a great job reducing her intake, I end up smoking more on the days we're together (thus the days where I sometimes smoke 10, instead of 4). This has made it very difficult for me to really make the next step. Just to be straight, I place no blame on her, it's my free will that I join her when she steps out to smoke, just like it was my free will to start when I was a teenager (we only smoke outside, and to clarify, I've been a smoker for about 20 years, with a peak of about 3 packs of marb red per day).

It seems that something like the vapor4life vaporking would be a good fit for me; to go to the next level. Often I really just want one or two puffs in the morning during my commute, and a couple on the way home. I generally look forward to a whole cigarette when we chat on the phone in the evening, and one before bed. When we're together, we sort of enable each other, thus increasing the intake.

I like the idea that the re-fillable cartomizers for the vaporking would be cheaper than the pre-filled, and allow me to swap flavors. I may even try ones that I wouldn't prefer as much, just to reduce the psychological desire to take a puff.

What are your suggestions for a starter setup, and do the "blanks" really work well? I read some of the thoughts on nicotine suggestions, but because I'm so sporadic with some days having almost no intake, to some days being a mild smoker, I'm not really sure where to start on either pre-filled, or blank carts. I do still have a physical dependence, but it's become mostly a psychological issue, and the idea of being able to move to an ultra low concentration, or at some point a non-nicotine level, entices me very much.

Once I'm done quitting, I would like to pass the e-cig on to her, in order to help her along as well. Anything overly complicated like modding would be right out the window, as she would probably not be interested in all of that, or on the other hand it might turn into too interesting of a hobby for her to stop (ie. she might really enjoy vaping and increase her intake).

I'm looking mostly to find out what a suggested starter kit should include, for say a month or two of steady state use, at my levels, as well as any suggestions for tapering off.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

It is nearly impossible to predict what nicotine strength anyone will need, but...

Given how much you smoke, I would probably steer you to 12mg and 18mg strengths.
There is a very good chance that one of those, or something in between, will be good for you.

And if you get a small sample size of each, in the same flavor, you can mix them together if needed to get something in between.

Here is a great place to look for good samplers...
Taking the plunge!

Post number 3 of the above thread has a nice list of good places to get sampler sizes.

Wow! With all those selections, I may get a 3 piece PV as well, and use it just for the flavor enjoyment, once I'm done with nicotine.

Any suggestions for a manual battery PV brand, that has a solid reputation, and would be good for infrequent use? I could see myself using one for maybe a half hour a night, before bed, just to sit outside and enjoy it as if it were a cigar, minus the nicotine.

I got an automatic super mini, and a tornado. I would have chalked ecigs up to crap if I had just gotten the super mini. The Tornado is awsome!!! Quit smoking after the first puff off of it

Do you have a link to that one? I'm finding google to be very disingenuous when it comes to finding e-cig info.

The Joye 510 is a greater starter with limited battery life, but if you are using it for short periods of time, would like be a good inexpensive way to go about it. Cignot your Midwest Electronic Cigarette store. sells them as well as the eGo which is a larger battery with interchangeable parts with the 510 and cignot sells it in a pretty pink for your girlfriend. You will get many replies but for me those are both ones I have used and had good luck with them.
As for vaping with no nicotine, my hubby quit smoking 6 years ago but still has the occasional smoke. He found he likes the taste of my e-cigs so he had me order him some 0 nicotine juice for him to have when he feels the urge.

Thank you, Lisa!

I like the reviews of that eGo.

I'm thinking I'll grab a vaporking, and an eGo. That way, she can decide which one she prefers, and we'll both be happy.

Considering the price of Chantix (even with health coverage), or the patch, it seems like an investment that is worth the money. I've done Chantix twice, and while it worked very well in general (*I'm not an MD., do not take my anecdote as evidence*), it would have been great to have known more about e-cigs at the time. I truly believe that would have been the crutch that would have saved me from starting back, had I known about the non-nicotine, or at least low-nicotine, option of a PV. Had I known about this forum when I quit before, I think I could have happily satiated my psychological withdrawal with one of these devices. I look forward to my next, and hopefully final, quit, and will share the experience with my GP.

Thank you for your responses,

Lots to be said - I'll keep it brief. Joye 510 = good place to start. Get min. of 2 batts, 2 attys, a charger, refillable carts or cartomisers, and 30 ml of liquid. Mega batts last much longer (about $16 or so at electronicstix). You'll eventually need a bit more hardware for 2 people. Start with 18 mg. - may be good idea to get 15 ml of 18 mg. & 15 ml of 24 mg. I'm down to 4-6 mg., but too low too soon makes it harder to quit. If you're like many, just substitute it as much as you can, and one day you'll realize you haven't had an analog in x number of days. I would rec a tobacco flavor to begin with and a 100% VG (vegatable glycerin) base. Johnson Creek has an excellent tobacco flavor called 'domestic' (designed for the newbee) in VG. Chantix has a failure rate of about 85% (in the end), and patches, etc. are no better. A few good polls have been done that show a success rate of about 80% with e-cigs, but no scientific statistics. However, tens of thousands of x smokers will tell you they work, and there are many here.

Thank you all for your suggestions! It's been a great help.

So far I've decided that I will get a full vapor king kit, as well as a Joye eGo (assuming those 510 are compatible, parts wise, and can be used with a PC?). I really don't like the idea of constantly needing to worry about charging via a USB or wall socket, even though I know those are always around me.

I just have three quick questions.

1. If I do have an occasional e-puff in the house, is there any sort of toxin that my teenage son could be exposed to? I'm an out-door only smoker, and I don't want to release nicotine into the air inside, if there's any real possibility of it passing through the air to his room (I won't be vaping around him, or even with a door open, mind you).

2. If it does disperse safely, I don't want him thinking I'm having an actual cigarette in the house, so does the smell spread from room to room, or does it dissipate almost instantly? He's very much an encouragement of me quitting, so the last thing I want to have happen is him think that I'm going in the opposite direction.

3. How long should I expect refillable cartomizers, and atomizers to last, as a mild smoker? Granted, I understand it will vary from brand to brand, but is this something that I need to stock up on with my first purchase, or will the deluxe starter kits probably be ok for a month to get a feel for it all (juice aside)?

Ok, I guess that's four questions, since I snuck one into the first bit.

Thanks again!

There isn't that I'm aware of. It is supposed to be safe and the vapor does dissipate immediately. I doubt the smell will travel from room to room. But I don't quite have my sense of smell back yet, so I can be sure. I can tell you that I was vaping in a non smoking cab with the windows up and the cab driver didn't notice it. I asked him before I got out if he could smell it and he said no, he had no idea I was "smoking".

I think you should talk to him and explain what it is and does. He will probably be supportive.

I've seen people recommend having at least 2 spare atomizers and that they will last quite a while (several weeks to a few months) if you clean them, don't let them get too dry etc. I think there are some videos on that. I bought enough blank cartomizers to last me 2-3 months, since they are fairly cheap and I was ordering anyway. But I didn't order them until I knew I was going to like vaping.

Happy Vaping!

Good luck bud!
If I could throw in my :2c: I'd like to say you've come to the right place for information.
If I knew what I know now, I would have gotten an Ego or 2 at the start. LOL!
Now I have a Prodigy V3 and various other mods, but my Fiance has an Ego and it is very very cool and PERFECT for the beginner. It's literally a cross between a "MOD or PV" and an "e-cigarette or mini e-cig." Great first step.
I must say if your goal is to stop nicotine all together, then you have a great chance with vaping. When I started, I looked at it as an alternative. I'm really not trying to quit right now. I don't smoke at all, but I vape alot and enjoy it. It's MUCH safer than smoking. You can FEEL it. So I enjoy getting my nicotine in what feels like a much safer way. You will too.
However, it will take alot of pressure off you to look at this step into e-cigs almost like you're simply "changing brands." Keep vaping as often as you crave. Do it freely. The more you get used to vaping and the good flavors and the resulting better health, you'll start to crave analogs less and less. They disgust me now!
Once you're completely taken by the vaping world, you can handle your nicotine dosage accordingly. It's alot easier to quit nicotine through vaping because there's a wide range of Nicotine levels available.
